The New “Resident Evil” Movie Infects the Weekend Box Office!

To no one’s surprise, the live-action horror-comedy Resident Evil movie from director and co-writer Zach Cregger easily took the top spot at the weekend box office.
Released in the USA on September 18, 2026, the tracking for Resident Evil had been quite good, even though online discussions had begun about how Cregger’s take on the Resident Evil IP wasn’t it. But hey, when it comes to Hollywood, box office is king. And there’s no denying that regardless of what certain OG RE video game fans might feel, the latest Resident Evil is an undeniable success for Sony.
It’s a much-needed win for Constantin Film after the box office failure of Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, which was meant to successfully reboot the IP after the Milla Jovovich-led series. And with Cregger having given an adrenaline shot to the live-action side of the IP, it will be interesting to see if Cregger’s take will continue with sequels or if someone else will need to step in to redefine the movie series… yet again.
Anyway, talking about the numbers, Resident Evil debuted atop the domestic weekend box office with an estimated $60 million. As of writing this piece, the movie has collected around $108 million against a reported production budget of $75 million. According to analysts, it’s supposed to surpass the worldwide gross of the first three Milla Jovovich films, with the third installment collecting $149 million back in 2007.
However, the chances of Cregger’s Resident Evil surpassing the impressive $300 million global gross of 2010’s RE: Afterlife are slim. Even though the latest installment holds a 96% Critic and 91% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes, it’s not the kind of horror-comedy that has managed to garner much attention overseas. So, Jovovich’s legacy can rest easy as she is still the undisputed leading lady of the most financially profitable RE films.
As for my opinion, I wrote in my review that Cregger’s Resident Evil wasn’t really a Resident Evil movie, and I still stand by that statement. But having said that, I do think it has its moments, and I can understand the high review scores and the money at the box office. Again, it will be interesting to see if the sequel will lean more into the video games or if it will continue to do it’s own thing.
Practical Magic 2 dropped to number 2 with an estimated $12 million. Starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman, the movie has collected around $76 million against a reported production budget of $75 million. To be fair, the first Practical Magic wasn’t a huge hit at the box office back in 1998. So, it’s understandable that the nostalgia-fueled sequel seems to be performing similarly.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day, The Odyssey, and Coyote vs Acme continued to print money, with Spider-Man BND sitting comfortably at a whopping $2.4 billion worldwide. Just wow!
Starring Mena Massoud (Disney’s live-action Aladdin), the new biblical drama Daniel and the Fiery Furnace debuted in 7th place with an estimated $3.14 million. It was followed by the 40th Anniversary re-release of The Transformers: The Movie from 1986, which managed to gross around $3.1 million. Not bad, The Transformers IP. Not bad.
