Whatever your stance is on how Netflix continues to churn out content after content, you have to give major points to the streaming juggernaut for offering films that traditional studios wouldn’t have greenlit. The Old Guard, starring Oscar-winner Charlize Theron, is a queer-led action movie and I’m so here for it!

Netflix will be releasing The Old Guard on July 10, 2020. The film stars Charlize Theron as Andy, KiKi Layne as Nile Freeman, Matthias Schoenaerts as Booker, Marwan Kenzari as Joe, Luca Marinelli as Nicky, and Chiwetel Ejiofor as Copley. Now, before some people argue about it being “too woke”, I would like to remind you all that the upcoming movie is based on the comic book of the same name.

The comic book had queer leads, and that’s exactly what the movie is doing. Deal with it!

I do have to share that I hadn’t read The Old Guard when the first trailer dropped. However, I was able to register the queer energy emanating for the content shown.

Netflix just released the second trailer and it’s clear that this movie is queer!

This is big, y’all. When was the last time we got an action film that had queer leads? When was the last time we got an action film in which the queerness of the characters wasn’t hidden behind subtext or hinted at in a comedic manner?

After reading the comics, I can share that Andy is a queer woman while Joe and Nicky are in a romantic relationship. The comic book story, by writer Greg Rucka, didn’t shy away from sharing how deep their connection went. So, here’s hoping the film does justice to their relationship.

I was excited to watch The Old Guard before and now I’m even more excited to see what it will deliver to people around the globe.

As I have mentioned before, people around the world are more than willing to watch content with queer leads as long as the story is engrossing. Money Heist is a great example of this.

So, mark your calendars for July 10, 2020!
