While The Sims 4 left me disappointed, I was still looking forward to the first expansion pack in the series. The Sims 4: Get To Work is available in stores right now but is it any good? I played the expansion pack for two whole days and I have to say that it brings much-needed improvements to the base game.

Ever since I started playing The Sims franchise, I always wanted to follow my Sim to his or her workplace instead of seeing them disappear in a rabbit hole. The Sims 3 introduced options to control a Sim’s actions while at work, and The Sims 2: Open For Business allowed players to open their own retail shops. With The Sims 4: Get To Work, players can actually follow their Sim to their workplace and control them in interesting new environments.

First, I’m going to talk about the three careers the game has hugely developed on. Your Sim can become a doctor, a detective, or a scientist. By choosing any one of these careers, you will be able to travel to new lots that have the buildings where your Sim will work. Every profession has ten levels and a lot of features that will keep your Sim busy.

Being a doctor will send you to a hospital where you have to work your way up to higher ranks. The low level tasks include taking patients to rooms for their checkups while higher ranking tasks include performing surgery, and delivering babies. Seeing numerous Sims come to the hospital for medical attention is weirdly fun in a very ‘The Sims’ way.

11130143_375298739320600_4078412834772089442_nThe scientist career track will send your Sim to research facility where they will spend days analyzing weird samples, inventing new devices, testing potions, and contacting aliens. The ability to invent the ElectroFlux Wormhole Generator can also be unlocked. This will enable your Sim to travel to an alien planet called Sixam (Yes, it’s Maxis spelled backwards). You can also travel there by maxing out the Rocket Science skill. Sixam is a whole new world for your Sim to explore where they can collect rare valuables and interact with other aliens. You can also create aliens in Create a Sim. Aliens also have the ability to make themselves look like normal Sims, so finding out if a Sim you interact with is an alien or not adds to the fun.

The detective career track feels a little limited compared to the other two, though. It’s fun to collect evidence, investigate crime scenes, and arrest criminals, but after a while it all gets a bit monotonous. It was definitely the most boring career track for me. Keep in mind that not investigating properly and arresting an innocent will have a huge negative impact on your career performance so be careful.

If the above-mentioned careers aren’t for you then don’t worry. You can also start your own business. Your Sim can travel to a new lot called Magnolia Promenade, which has custom-built lots you can buy to start your entrepreneur dreams. You can also create your own store if the custom-built lots are expensive for you. Once you create your own store you can start putting in things you want to sell, and controlling how to treat your employees. You will need to interact with potential customers if you want to guarantee a sale.

While the new career options have a lot to offer players, The Sims 4: Get To Work also introduces two new skills for your Sim. The bakery skill will allow your Sim to bake delicious goodies you can sell, while the photography skill is fun to try out once you create a studio inside your home. You can also put in filters to make the pictures your Sim takes stand out. There’s also a feature that allows your Sim to take selfies. The weirdness of the real world just magnifies itself in The Sims. I wouldn’t be surprised if The Sims franchise ends up introducing the selfie stick in the near future.

Before I end this review I have to talk about the best thing in The Sims 4: Get To Work. For all you ‘male pregnancy’ fans out there, your male Sims can now become pregnant! It’s an alien-induced pregnancy, but still seeing a male Sim coming to the hospital to deliver a baby is awesome! Now if only this feature is further developed in the upcoming expansion packs and male Sims can give birth to werewolf children I would be able to bring some fun Sterek (Stiles and Derek from Teen Wolf) fics to life through this game.

11133746_375298599320614_1949623676238883056_nI don’t know if I liked the Get To Work expansion pack because the base game was severely lacking, but with it costing $39.99 USD, I do feel it’s able to give players a lot to keep them busy for a few months. As I said in the review, it allows players to control their Sim while at work and it’s something I enjoyed, being a longtime The Sims fan.
