The “Station Eleven” Trailer Is Here and Super Relevant

Station Eleven trailer

The Station Eleven trailer is here, and it is haunting.

Station Eleven is an upcoming HBO Max streaming series based on the best-selling 2014 novel of the same name by Emily St. John Mandel. Like last year’s The Stand reboot, this story feels way too real after everything that’s happened in the past two years. (And I still recommended it as a book to read while in quarantine, so go figure.)

For those who aren’t familiar with the book, it’s set in America before and after a swine flu epidemic kills most of the global population. The “before” parts detail the chaos as the flu sweeps the planet, while the “after” parts show how humanity has started to rebuild society, focusing mainly on the members of a traveling group of actors and musicians as they tour the Great Lakes region.

The trailer continues the recent tradition of taking traditionally happy-sounding songs and making them sad and melancholic. In this case, it’s “What the World Needs Now Is Love”. Yet the song is also contrasted nicely with a rising orchestral score that feels hopeful and resilient. These are played over scenes with various emotional beats – two people stocking up on supplies at an otherwise empty grocery store, two women standing among the fervor at a hospital, a woman giving birth, people hugging –  making it very clear that, at the very least, this show will give you emotional whiplash.

I am a big fan of Station Eleven and I feel like I should have known that it was optioned for a series, but I somehow didn’t (or I knew and then forgot – I do that sometimes). So when the trailer dropped yesterday I suddenly got very excited. This is one of my favorite books, and I’m definitely going to have to try and reread it before the show premieres next month.

Station Eleven will premiere on HBO Max on December 16, 2021.
