Fans of Supernatural and Scooby-Doo may be very interested in our latest Wednesday Webcomic, Third Shift Society, which features a pair of paranormal investigators, one of whom has a pumpkin for a head. (Yes, that’s really his head.)

Third Shift Society, by Meredith Moriarty, is the story of perpetually unlucky Ellie, who hasn’t been able to hold down a job and is kind of desperate for money. On her way home from losing her latest job, she stumbles across Ichabod, a pumpkin-headed paranormal detective battling a skeletal beast. When she tries to help Ichabod, Ellie discovers that she has the ability to shoot psychic flames from her hands, and Ichabod offers her a job as his partner.

In trying to branch out with my Webtoons, I often find myself clicking on the titles featured on the app header, or recommendations I’m given. They don’t always pan out, but sometimes I find a comic like this one, and the trial and error is worth it. I’ve never really been a fan of spooky stuff, but this is the kind of spooky I can handle. It reminds me a lot of one of my other recommended Webtoons, Lalin’s Curse.

A good story has compelling characters and an interesting plot, and Third Shift Society has both of these. Each part is a few chapters long, with Ellie and Ichabod on a different case each time. Along the way, Ichabod works on teaching Ellie control over her powers, and Ellie uncovers more and more about the supernatural world.

Each case is really interesting; so far, Ellie and Ichabod have looked into a haunted house and a cursed object in a museum. But we finally start getting into the meat of the plot when Ellie takes a case by herself and discovers that there is something much bigger happening. I’m very intrigued by this mystery. I have no idea what’s going on and I can’t wait to find out more.

The characters are also amazing, but naturally, Ichabod is the one I really want to know more about. He’s very insistent that his head is really a pumpkin, so is that, like, a species? Are there other pumpkin-headed people out there that we’re going to meet, or is Ichabod the only one? I am curious about Ellie, though; she was completely unaware of her powers until she went to help Ichabod, so I’d like to learn where her abilities come from.

Story and characters are important, but a webcomic needs to be about the art as well, and I really like the art in Third Shift Society. There’s something very classic about it. I mentioned earlier that fans of Scooby-Doo might like this comic, and the art style kind of reminds me of some of the newer Scooby-Doo cartoons.

Also, Moriarty is incredibly skilled at giving expression to a pumpkin. His face doesn’t ever change but you can still tell what his face is doing, and that is honestly probably the best thing about this comic.

If you’re looking for a thriller with a good story, a great mystery, and some pretty fantastic character dynamics, you should definitely check out Third Shift Society.

Third Shift Society by Meredith Moriarty is hosted by Webtoon and updates every Friday.
