For anyone who has been wanting to see Tom Felton take on a queer role in a movie, Braking For Whales looks ready to deliver. This indie dramedy will be released on demand come April 24, 2020.

I’m always happy to learn about any new content that the Harry Potter movie crew has released or is working on. As far as my opinion goes, all the best to every one of them in their careers and life. Having recently watched Rupert Grint in Servant on Apple TV+ (the season one finale aired on January 17, 2020, and the show has been renewed for a second season), I’m looking forward to seeing what Felton will offer in Braking For Whales.

The cast includes Felton, Tammin Sursok (Pretty Little Liars), Wendi McLendon-Covey (Bridesmaids, The Goldbergs), David Koechner (The Goldbergs, Anchorman) and Austin Swift (We Summon The Darkness, Live By Night).

Braking for Whales was written by Tammin Sursok and her husband Sean McEwen. McEwen (Bernie, Aussie Girl) also directed this film.

The official synopsis reads:

Brandon and Star, estranged brother and sister, are brought together after their mother’s recent death and her absurd final request to dispose of her ashes in the body of a whale. With no choice or face losing their much-needed inheritance – they embark on a road trip to San Antonio, Texas where they not only encounter adventure, but also encounter each other.

Here’s the trailer!

I wasn’t expecting to find myself laughing during certain moments and also being quite intrigued while watching the trailer for Braking For Whales. The premise is so kooky, and I’m all for it!

I also appreciate that the story is about siblings. We need more films handling familial and platonic love – not everything has to be about sexual romance all the time.

From what I can tell, Felton’s character isn’t dealing well with his sexuality. It will be interesting to see how the narrative tackles that issue and if he grows into a better person by the end of the film.

From Gravitas Ventures, Braking For Whales (previously known as Whaling) will be available on VOD and Digital HD on April 24, 2020.

You can pre-order it on iTunes.
