Toy Story 4 Movie Review: The Toys are Back

Toy Story 4

One of my favorite movie franchises of all time is the Toy Story one. The original Toy Story movie was Pixar’s first full length movie in 1995. Toy Story 2 was released in 1999 and Toy Story 3 in 2010. Pixar has made us wait almost exactly 9 years for this newest addition to the family. The toys are back on the silver screen in what may very well be their swan song.

Toy Story 4 continues the story of the toys from where Toy Story 3 left off. Andy has given his toys to Bonnie and they have found a new child to love them. Bonnie starts kindergarten and created a new toy, Forky. Forky has a real problem understanding that he is a toy now and no longer trash. Before the school year officially begins, Bonnie and her family embark on a road trip and Forky uses this time to escape and go back to a world that he feels comfortable in: trash. Woody, seeing how much Bonnie truly loves Forky, goes after him to bring him back. While chasing after Forky, Woody encounters Gabby Gabby and her goons, the Bensons. Gabby Gabby is in desperate need of a new voice box and she has her eyes set on Woody’s. Woody also reunites with Bo Peep (who we last saw in the second installment of the franchise). She had been given away nine years earlier and has since become a “lost toy”.

So, I know you are anxiously awaiting to hear my thoughts, so here goes. Toy Story 4 is amazing! It has the same heart that the other three movies have had along with the comedic aspects that make it extremely entertaining. Kids will love it as much as adults, which is why I believe that this franchise of movies (and really Pixar movies as a whole) appeal to so many people worldwide. Toy Story 4 tugs at your heart strings as you remember your favorite toys and how they made you feel growing up. Also, keep your eyes peeled for several Pixar Easter eggs throughout the movie (grape soda bottle top is one of them).  I highly recommend this movie to anyone from 1 to 100 years old. I give Toy Story 4 4.75 cowboy hats out of 5.

Toy Story 4 is directed by Josh Cooley in his feature film debut. Tom Hanks returns to voice our favorite cowboy, Woody and Tim Allen returns as space commander Buzz Lightyear. After a hiatus in Toy Story 3, Annie Potts (Young Sheldon, Pretty in Pink) returns as Bo Peep. Toy Story 4 also introduces some new characters. Tony Hale (VEEP, Arrested Development) voices Forky, Bonnie’s newest toy. Gabby Gabby, a new doll, is voiced by Christina Hendricks (Mad Men, Good Girls) and Ducky and Bunny are voiced by the hilarious Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele respectively. The music is composed once again by the incomparable Randy Newman.
