“Boruto: Naruto Next Generations” Manga Issue 37 Review: United Front

Even though the front cover of the latest Boruto manga chapter, titled ‘United Front,’ showcased Jigen and Boruto, the two are yet to meet each other. However, we did get to enjoy an exciting fight between Jigen, Sasuke, and Naruto.

One of the things I haven’t liked about this manga series is how writer Ukyo Kodachi seems to be nerfing Naruto to raise the stakes. His fight with Delta made no sense, especially because Naruto didn’t make a single clone to get the kids to safety. Also, with the battle happening in Konoha, it was clear Naruto wouldn’t be able to unleash his full power due to collateral damage. That’s why it was a pleasant surprise when ‘United Front’ decided to change the battlefield for Naruto’s encounter with Jigen.

Jigen used his dimension-hopping ability to teleport himself and Naruto to a new dimension. The change in scenery allowed Naruto and Sasuke (who was able to track Naruto) to fight Jigen without any restrictions. Having said that, don’t think Boruto’s trend of using plot conveniences ended this month. I have no idea why Naruto and Sasuke didn’t unleash their full power right from the beginning. They both know Jigen is a dangerous being. So, why allow him any time to retaliate?

Why didn’t Sasuke activate his Perfect Susanoo? Why didn’t Naruto cover himself in the gigantic Nine-tails chakra body? Maybe they will do it in the next chapter? Let’s see. I’m just tired of seeing immensely powerful characters holding back to drag the story or (forcefully) make their encounter with an enemy feel intense.

I did like seeing Naruto and Sasuke working exceptionally well together to defeat Jigen. Now, if only we can get a fight with the entire Team 7 (Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura) involved.

We got to know a bit more about Jigen’s ability in this chapter. Turns out he can shrink objects (including himself) at will. It immediately reminded me of Pym Particles from Marvel Comics. Apparently, Naruto and Sasuke are fighting Ant-Man.

As for Kawaki, I liked seeing him show some strong emotions to protect Naruto. No one has ever been kind to Kawaki, and that’s why it has been nice to see Kawaki receive some kind of love and respect from others.

Due to being very action-heavy, this was a short manga chapter (storywise). I was expecting to learn more about the Karma mark’s connection with the Byakugo seal. Anyway, I’m excited to see what happens next.

Feel free to share your thoughts about ‘United Front’ with us.
