Wakanda Forever, The Marvels: An MCU News Update

Wakanda Forever

Marvel Studios released a bunch of new information today including the titles of two upcoming MCU sequels: Wakanda Forever and The Marvels.

The Wakanda Forever and The Marvels sequel titles came from an MCU compilation video, which also came with sneak peeks of most of the upcoming Marvel Studios films through the rest of the year and title cards for several beyond that. Not gonna lie, here. The video straight up made me cry. In addition to the video starting with a very emotional voice-over by Stan Lee as they showed important clips from the Infinity Saga, the entire thing was aimed and making us emotional for the MCU to resume. I can’t wait to get back to the theaters! I can’t believe how much I’ve missed the experience. It’s left a large hole in my life. And now we’re getting close to being able to return.

Let’s break down everything we just saw. Because this was A LOT.

Black Widow – July 9, 2021

There’s no new information with this one. We’ve known the July 9th release date for a while, but the sneak peek still feels very new. I can’t imagine how difficult it’s been for them trying to advertise this film as the next MCU installment and the launch of Phase 4 movies for over a year and a half now, but we’re finally going to get it. This film will also be released on Disney+ with premiere access.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings – September 3, 2021

We got our first official teaser of Shang-Chi a couple of weeks back (as a nice little birthday gift to Simu Liu), but it’s still incredibly exciting to see it in the full line up here. This is the first film that had major disruptions due to the pandemic, so it’s great to see they managed to finish it safely. The production team took precautions very seriously early on, and I look forward to seeing what they’ve created under such unusual conditions. Not to mention, Simu Liu has been an absolute gift to the MCU fandom.

Eternals – November 5, 2021

This is our first glimpse at actual Eternals footage. Brief as it may be, it definitely gave me a lot of hope for the film. Marvel Studios hasn’t nailed the landing on ensemble superhero properties outside of the Avengers too terribly well (let us not speak of Inhumans ever again), so I’ve been a bit nervous. Not to mention the all-star cast has made me a bit uneasy as I’m partial to the properties that primarily highlight new talents. But the director, Chloe Zhao, just won an Oscar, so if you add that on top of these incredible looking clips, I’m kind of on board with it now. Let’s do this!

Spider-Man: No Way Home – December 17, 2021

This is the only 2021 film we didn’t actually get footage for, but we’re 7 months out so I’m not that surprised. Besides, we are getting FOUR new films in 2021. They are really making up lost time that’s been taken from us due to the pandemic, so I’m gonna cut them some slack on the lack of clips on this one. We’ll get them eventually.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness – March 25, 2022

Words cannot describe how excited I am for Multiverse of Madness. The post-credits scene of WandaVision was supposed to lead directly into the film, so the pandemic did sort of jumble this a bit, but I have an incredible amount of faith in the MCU to still pull it all together. Besides, what a marvelous excuse to do a WandaVision rewatch in the beginning part of 2022! Not like I haven’t already done several rewatches, but, well, it’s good to have an excuse, you know?

Thor: Love and Thunder – May 6, 2022

Let’s be real here. Thor: Ragnarok was the best Thor film of them all, and we get more of that Taika Waititi magic in May 2022. This movie is currently filming, so keep your eye on social media for set pics!

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever – July 8, 2022

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Guys, I’m gonna cry. They’ve had to rewrite the script due to the unfortunate passing of Chadwick Boseman last year, and apparently, it’s incredibly respectful of the situation. Filming begins this summer and is expected to last 6 months.

The Marvels – November 11, 2022

Like 2021, there will be four films in 2022 to make up for lost time. This one is currently filming and I can’t wait to see some set pics. The official Marvel Studios website gives us some brief and basic information about the film.

Marvel Studios’ The Marvels will feature Brie Larson returning to the role of Captain Marvel/Carol Danvers. In the film, she’ll be joined by Teyonah Parris, who was first introduced as adult Monica Rambeau in Marvel Studios’ WandaVision, along with Iman Vellani, who will appear as Ms. Marvel in the upcoming Disney+ series of the same name.

Prepare to experience it and fly higher, further, and faster with the film, directed by Nia DaCosta!

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania – February 17, 2023

I remember when I was skeptical of the Ant-Man films, but they have turned out to be some of the best in the entire MCU. This one is also currently filming, despite its release date being nearly two years out. I expect this to be heavy with the special effects, so a long post-production period makes sense.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 – May 5, 2023

GotG 3 is currently in pre-production and has hit a lot of bumps in the road on its journey, but it’s heading our way. I don’t expect to hear too much from this one for a while as filming isn’t scheduled to begin until later this year, but some casting tidbits may come out between now and then.

Fantastic Four

We know… nothing about this. We know John Watts is directing, but we have zero casting information, and not even a target release date. But that’s okay, guys. We have ten films in just two years time, on top of all the Disney+ content, so we’re going to be fine! Still, let’s keep our eyes out for this one, eh?

Which MCU property are you most looking forward to?  I’m torn between Wakanda Forever to see how they’ll handle the change, but also Love and Thunder because, let’s be real, Taika Waititi is absolute magic.

  1. “Which MCU property are you most looking forward to?” Love and Thunder, followed by The Marvels.
