Hulu has released the trailer for the upcoming queer high school rom-com Crush. As the streaming movie nears the April 29, 2022, release date, catch up to the (alleged) drama between leads Rowan Blanchard and Auli’i Cravalho.

I’ll get to the alleged drama in a bit. First, let’s go over what Crush is about. The premise deals with high school art student Paige (Rowan Blanchard) deciding to join the track team in hopes of getting closer to her crush (played by Isabella Ferreira). However, after joining the team, Paige realizes she’s falling for another teammate named AJ (Auli’i Cravalho) and, with time, comes to understand what love means when in high school.

Along with Blanchard, Cravalho, and Ferreira, the cast also includes Tyler Alvarez, Teala Dunn, Rico Paris, Aasif Mandvi, Michelle Buteau, and Megan Mullally.

Crush was directed by Sammi Cohen and co-written by Kirsten King and Casey Rackham. The movie serves as Cohen’s directorial debut.

It was produced by Jeremy Garelick, Will Phelps, and Ryan Bennett for American High alongside The Geekiary’s favorite Natasha Lyonne, Maya Rudolph, and Danielle Renfrew Behrens for Animal Pictures.

Here’s the very fun trailer!

Now, coming to the alleged drama between Blanchard and Cravalho. Apparently, Cravalho shared on social media that Blanchard was biphobic but their upcoming movie was still “going to be so cute and queer!!!”

From what I could gather, the video (which was quickly deleted) was posted last year.

Here’s a tweet with the actual TikTok video (I apologize if the tweet was deleted when you’re reading this).

For those of you who might not know, Cravalho came out as bisexual back in April 2020 and Blanchard came out as queer in 2016. Of course, with Hulu announcing the release date for Crush and starting the promotional campaign, some people had to share certain interesting receipts with me.

Since last week, my Twitter timeline continues to have a bunch of fans joking about how Cravalho should be awarded an Oscar for pretending to like Blanchard while filming the upcoming queer rom-com and how Crush could basically be a real-life version of the famous “enemies to friends/lovers” trope. I mean, the chemistry between the lead actresses is quite evident from the trailer.

A number of fans are looking forward to the live press junkets to see how Cravalho and Blanchard will act around each other. And you know what? After learning about this alleged beef between the two, I’m also interested in seeing if they will give interviews together or not. As far as I know, Cravalho never addressed posting that particular TikTok video and I highly doubt Hulu will make her release a statement or something.

Regardless of the alleged drama, I will be watching Crush. I like how it’s not another coming-out story and the high school setting has more than one openly queer student.

Feel free to share your thoughts with us!

And here’s me reacting to the trailer, if you’re interested.
