The creative team behind the webcomic Song for Cantalagua weaves a complex story about community and valuing the little things in life.

In Song for Cantalagua, thirteen-year-old Nila lives in the idyllic and diverse town of Cantalagua. People from other countries would come to visit to appreciate its natural beauty. However, a shadow now drapes over Cantalagua, and Nila has to figure out a mysterious phenomenon before it’s too late.

With lush images and endearing character dynamics, Song for Cantalagua achieves in creating a quiet but captivating story. The high stakes of an endangered town neither overwhelm or bog down this webcomic’s potential. Plus, the story shows the power of silent moments over dialogue. Cantalagua, more than a tourist stop, floods with people from all walks of life. And we see that through Nila’s delightful eyes.

Nila’s narrative arc begins with her dreaming about the river and waterfall shushing her. From there, we get a glimpse of her world and the people she interacts with, including her friends. She helps around her home (called the Lighthouse) and takes care of any unattended plant she spots. Her need to help others leads to her own lack of self-care.
