Geekiary News Briefs! Gays in Disney and Alien Films, X-Men Prime, Inhumans Cast, and More!

DC Comics The Big Book of Girl Power

Welcome to today’s Geekiary Briefs! We’ll be talking about X-Men Prime, queer representation in Disney and Alien films, Downtown Bookworks supporting Planned Parenthood, and more!

The first look at X-Men Prime has been released. The one-shot picks up after the Inhumans vs X-Men event and shows the mutants “picking up the pieces” after the war. It’ll arrive in stores on 29th March, 2017, and will usher in the RessureXion arc. I’m looking forward to X-Men Prime and where Marvel Comics decides to take the mutants from there. The Inhuman Royal Family will be going into space so at least that’s a plus.

In the wake of their war with the Inhumans, the X-MEN are at a crossroads. Where do they go from here? Luckily, one beloved X-Men has the answer to that question: Xavier’s dream comes full circle as KITTY PRYDE returns to the X-Men, ready to lead them in their mission to protect a world that hates and fears them. The next chapter of the X-Men’s saga starts here! (via CBR)

Two upcoming movies will be including queer representation for the first time. The first gay couple in the Alien film series will make their debut in Alien: Covenant. Both characters have been described as “badass soldiers” who also happen to be married to each other. Considering the franchise’s track record of killing almost the entire cast, those two are probably not going to survive till the end. Alien: Covenant is scheduled for a 19th May 2017 release. Disney will also be dipping its toe in the queer pool with Beauty and the Beast. LeFou will be exploring his sexuality in the film and try to make sense of his relationship with Gaston. I’m a bit iffy about it, though. LeFou coming out as queer could play into stereotypes about gay men pining for straight dudes, and being villains, even if minor ones. The whole thing could easily come across as disrespectful to the LGBTQ+ community (it already is) for the sake of a few laughs. (via DailyMail)

If Disney does want to give audiences queer representation that matters they should just make Elsa come out in Frozen 2.

The casting for Marvel’s Inhumans series is well underway. Serinda Swan has been cast as Medusa. She’ll be joining the likes of Anson Mount and Iwan Rheon who’ll play Black Bolt and Maximus respectively. (via Entertainment Weekly)

Logan seems to be moving towards an impressive debut. The R-rated film might end up having the biggest weekend opening of 2017. The film has received rave reviews. There’s also a black-and-white version of Logan in the works.

Who says loving superheroes can’t make the real world better? From 1st to 15th March, Downtown Bookworks (a women-run and woman-owned business) will be donating a portion of the proceeds from sales of My First Book of Girl Power and The Big Book of Girl Power to Planned Parenthood.

Downtown Bookworks Planned Parenthood

When we first conceived of and published these books, we just thought it would be a great idea to showcase powerful female role models for young girls. Now, our girl power books feel more like a rallying cry,” said Julie Merberg, President of Downtown Bookworks.

I’ve reviewed the publisher’s DC Comics books and, even though I’m a grownup, I found them to be relaxing and informative reads. You should go ahead and buy these books to show your support. Also, use the hashtags #StandwithPP and #GirlPower.

A new trailer for the upcoming Pokemon animated film has been released. It shows Ash and Pikachu’s first encounter. As someone who followed Pokemon since the first episode, the trailer does give rise to a lot of feels. Fingers crossed Misty (Ash’s best female companion) and Brock are part of this film, too. Pokemon! Kimi ni Kimeta! (don’t ask me to translate. You should all know this!) will open in Japan on 15th July, 2017.

What do you think of today’s briefs? Have you read titles by Downtown Bookworks? Will Disney’s Beauty and the Beast provide suitable queer representation? Excited for Pokemon? What developments will be shown in X-Men Prime? Let us know.
