The Yanket: The Blanket Nobody Asked For

The Yanket: nobody asked for this novelty Family Guy blanket. And yet, do not ask and you shall still receive. And it’s HILARIOUS.

I was provided a free Yanket for review. The opinions are my own.

My boyfriend in college, horrified I’d never seen a single episode of Family Guy, made it a ritual for us to watch the entire series. Spoiler alert: we broke up. But I continued to watch. And I absolutely cannot scrub my mind clean of Peter Griffin’s invention: the Yanket, which is a blanket with decoy arms that you can wear in public while you — uh — take care of your solo NSFW business. Talk about cringe. You can watch the video here because I refuse to embed it.

Yanket

Imagine my amusement (and slight horror) upon learning that Toynk Toys made the Yanket a reality, and you can now purchase it on their website. Obviously, I had to own it. You know, for the nostalgia and all that. And then I received one. I wasn’t sure what I was expecting.

It comes folded neatly in a bag with handles for convenient carrying and doesn’t have that plastic odor.

The blanket itself is incredibly soft, almost velvety, and bright pink with its name on the left bottom corner. Stuffed cartoon fleece arms hang awkwardly from the blanket itself, making it difficult to be functionally cozy because it keeps falling down my neck and shoulders if I’m sitting upright. Its dual layers make it hard (giggity) to pull up properly to snuggle into. But I’m kind of a blanket snob. It would be cool if the arms were hollow for you to stick your own arms down into like a Snuggie, even though it defeats the purpose of yanking it in the privacy of your own blanket. Also, $49.99 is a bit steep for a blanket.

Yanket

Despite the cons, there are some pros as well. It makes a funny gag gift for any friend or family member who enjoys Family Guy. It’s a great lazy cosplay or Halloween idea, but of course, only other people who have seen the episode would understand. If you cut into the fabric and remove the stuffing from the arms you might be able to make it functional and funny but once again, you’re defeating the purpose of a novelty blanket.

I made the mistake of leaving the Yanket on my bed and came back to find that my dog had claimed it. That’s just fine. She has paws and needs the decoy arms more than I do anyway.
