You Will More Than Like “Please Like Me”

There aren’t a lot of shows that have a main LGBTQ+ character in it. Whenever I find out about one I try to check it out and recommend it to you. About a month ago I found out about “Please Like Me”, and I have to say that it’s one of the best shows currently on TV.

The main character is named Josh (Josh Thomas) and the series deals with his realization that he’s gay. He lives with his straight friend, Tom (Thomas Ward), and theirs is one of the better gay/straight relationships I have seen on TV. There is no cliché storyline about Josh having a crush on his straight friend, and that’s partly why their relationship seems more natural.

The show also doesn’t shy away from giving gay relationships the same amount of screen time as the straight ones. Josh and Tom also face about the same amount of drama with their significant others.

Josh is a character I feel a lot of us will relate to, or know someone who’s like him. He remains reserved and makes every situation awkward for himself and other people. He’s the guy that will be go to a party and spend his time standing in a corner holding a drink in his hand. He’s the guy who will blurt out things and accidentally hurt someone’s feelings. However, he knows who he is as a person and that adds to the honesty of the show. Being gay is only a part of him and definitely not his only defining trait.

Another appreciable thing about the show is that it deals with a lot of important issues in a very respectable manner. That’s something quite impressive considering the show can be described as a humorous drama. The show tackles things such as: homophobia, mental illness, divorce, interracial marriage, and much more. I didn’t find anything offensive in the eleven episodes of the show I’ve watched so far.

The show is currently airing its second season, consisting of ten episodes, and a third has been ordered to air next year.

If you are looking for a show that has a gay lead, delivers layered characters, talks about growing up, and tackles a ton of sensitive social issues, then Please Like Me is for you.
