From Australian filmmaking brother duo Kiah Roache-Turner and Tristan Roache-Turner, the zombie action-horror flick Wyrmwood: Apocalypse will be released digitally in the US come April 14, 2022. The trailer has got me intrigued!

The premise of Wyrmwood: Apocalypse involves Rhys (Luke McKenzie) living in a zombie-infested wasteland. His profession involves capturing civilians and handing them off to what’s left of the military. However, things change for Rhys when he captures a half-zombie-half-human named Grace (Tasia Zalar). He thinks that Grace might be the key to ending the zombie apocalypse. Rhys then teams up with his sister Maxi (Shantae Barnes-Cowan) to rescue Grace and prevent her from undergoing experimentation.

There are two main reasons I’m interested in watching this action-horror film. First, we don’t get a lot of zombie flicks involving a brother and sister dynamic. A bunch of them tend to have the leads be romantic interests for each other and feature unnecessary romantic drama. So, I’m looking forward to seeing how Rhys and Maxi work as a team.

Second, Maxi is played by Shantae Barnes-Cowan. I got to know about her through the enjoyable Australian vampire hunting show called Firebite. Premiering on December 16, 2021, the first season consists of eight episodes. You can watch it on AMC+ or Amazon Prime Video. Firebite offered a different take on the vampire role and I hope it comes back for a second season. You can read my Firebite coverage here.

Coming back to the current film, for those who might not know, Wyrmwood: Apocalypse is a sequel to Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead (which premiered at the 2014 Fantastic Fest). For the sequel, the brothers share co-writing credits, with Kiah Roache-Turner serving as director and Tristan Roache-Truner serving as producer. Blake Northfield is also a producer. Todd Brown and Maxime Cottray are executive producers for XYZ Films.

Here’s the trailer!

I like the overall vibe of the promotional footage. It reminded me of the gore, humor, and camp found in Z Nation and the Resident Evil franchise.

The runtime comes in at 90 minutes. As of writing this piece, the film hasn’t been rated.

I guess I’ll go and watch Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead to prepare myself for the sequel.

What about you?
