The official trailer for the upcoming adult animated series Creature Commandos by James Gunn has been released during New York Comic Con 2024.

For those of you who might know, due to the live-action (drama-filled) DCEU being completely scrapped by Warner Bros. Discovery, Creature Commandos is supposed to be the first project to officially launch a new DC Universe helmed by James Gunn. So, it’s safe to assume, that the narrative in this particular animated series for DC Studios and Max could be considered canon once the new live-action Superman: Legacy movie arrives.

Creature Commandos will consist of seven episodes that Gunn has written and executive-produced. The premise is quite similar to Suicide Squad with a team of villains and criminals being put together to handle extremely dangerous secretive missions. As the name states, this team will be made of beings that are now considered “creatures” and thus aren’t “human”.

The newly released trailer has Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) explaining to Rick Flag Sr. (Frank Grillo) that certain inmates need to be recruited to handle an incident and she goes on to show who Rick will be working with. Again, she wasn’t allowed to use humans. So, she decided on the current roster of creatures.

The team has The Bride (Indira Varma), Frankenstein (David Harbour), Dr. Phosphorus (Alan Tudyk), Weasel (Sean Gunn), Nina Mazursky (Zoë Chao), and G.I. Robot (also Gunn), with Rick Flag Sr. acting as their handler. Of course, you can expect a whole lot of blood and gore because the Creature Commandos don’t hold back during fights. Not only that, but the characters will also have their backstories explored, allowing viewers to see them as multi-layered characters. And while I’m good with characters being fleshed out, I hope some of them are evil and not “misunderstood”.

Here’s the action-packed trailer!

Frankly, the animation style isn’t doing it for me. But oh well. It is what it is. Also, certain fans have already begun to compare the show’s explicit violence to Invincible. So, let’s see how that discussion pans out.

Creature Commandos is ready to premiere on Thursday, December 5, 204, on Max. Weekly episodes will follow through January 16, 2025.

The show has been produced by DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation. Peter Safran, Dean Lorey, and Sam Register also executive produce. Rick Morales serves as a supervising producer.
