One of the most anticipated horror films of the year, Good Boy, has received an official trailer. The upcoming movie examines surviving dark supernatural dangers from a dog’s perspective.

Directed by Ben Leonberg, who co-wrote the screenplay with Alex Cannon, Good Boy follows a man named Todd (Shane Jensen) and his dog, Indy. According to the promotional material, after the death of a family member, Todd decides to relocate to an old rural farmhouse that was owned by his grandfather. Apparantly, it’s known that the house might be haunted. However, Todd decides to ignore that. And, of course, dark entities show up soon enough. Indy’s able to sense them before Todd can, but being a dog, there’s only so much Indy can do to communicate the incoming dangers to his human companion.

Along with Jensen and Indy, the cast also includes Arielle Friedman, Stuart Rudin, and Larry Fessenden.

Here’s the chilling official trailer!

I like how it began with footage of Indy as a happy puppy and then switched to the narrative’s eerie vibe inside the haunted house.

“Good Boy” – Official Trailer

Yeah, this movie is ready to do a number on dog owners. Certain people are already quite superstitious about their canine companions being able to see, hear, and sense entities beyond the veil, and this movie is going to support said fears.

I think everybody who has had a pet has wondered or maybe worried why their dog was barking at nothing or staring at empty corners. We kind of wanted to explore that as just a core engine of the movie and spin it into a haunted house movie,” Leonberg told Deadline at SXSW Studio. “They say don’t work with kids or animals for a reason… the solution to that challenge was to build a production entirely around him.”

According to Deadline, a lot went into aiding Indy to give the required performance for such an ambitious project. Leonberg and his wife, Kari Fischer (producer), adapted their home and even acted as stand-ins for three years due to Indy’s production schedule. With Indy not being a trained animal actor, a lot of patience was required to make such a film, and said patience bore fruit that will, according to current reviews, hook the audience.

Good Boy has already seen quite a warm reception. It had a sold-out premiere at SXSW, with Indy being awarded the ‘Howl of Fame’ award for Best Canine Performance. The project has played at the Overlook Film Festival in New Orleans. It was also screened at the Calgary Underground Film Festival.

The Rotten Tomatoes Critic Score currently stands at 95%.

Looking at how things are online, people seem excited about watching Good Boy when it gets a theatrical debut on October 3, 2025. However, they are hoping nothing too bad happens to Indy. Also, certain people have brought up how the film sounds like a more “grounded” live-action version of the Courage the Cowardly Dog animated series.

I do plan on watching Good Boy. So, I’ll report back if things go according to plan.
