Jack of All Trades, Party of None 1×12 Review: “Protects His Comrades”

Jack of All Trades Party of None anime season 1 episode 12, titled ‘Protect His Comrades’, served as an exciting finale. I’m so here for this anime releasing a sophomore season ASAP!

With Scion’s party attacking Sophia, Logan, and Caroline in the previous episode, I was hyped for Orun figuring out a way to defeat or run away from the Great Dragon to help his students before it’s too late. Also, I had been waiting for Orun and Scion’s reunion, especially because of what such a meeting would reveal about Orun’s past. Fortunately, ‘Protect His Comrades’ didn’t disappoint when it came to action and certain developments.

While Scion showed a hint of sadness over her team having to kill promising young adventurers, it was a mission that needed to be fulfilled to prevent the Cyclamen Church from clearing the Great Dungeons and enacting their plan to resurrect a lost Dark God. For the Amunthoth, the clan that Scion was a part of, murdering adventurers was necessary for the greater good of the world.

Even though there was no chance that Sophia and Logan could win against a single member of Scion’s party (a muscular dude), I still liked seeing the duo try their best while they waited for Caroline to regain consciousness after getting hit by the guy. Logan used a well-placed trap while Sophia’s special ability was revealed to be Telekinesis. Sophia only had enough mana to use it once, but you can tell it’s a very impressive special ability to have in such a world. I’m looking forward to seeing her level it up.

I liked the moment the duo realized that the guy was ready to get serious about their battle because he had decided to be okay with only leaving one of them alive. Only one of Orun’s students would be enough to lure him out. While I understood some fans wanting Logan and Sophia to keep fighting until their last breath, I think that having the young Heroes-to-be admit defeat when faced with death was a more natural reaction. They still had a lot to learn as adventurers, and it was the first time they had faced a human wanting to kill one of them in cold blood. Seeing Sophia hoping for Selma or Orun to show up to save them fit with her character.

Of course, Orun and Unit 1 appeared in the nick of time to save the young trio. However, it wasn’t before Orun unleashed powerful attacks to defeat the Great Dragon. Seeing him morph his sword to hit the giant with a variety of moves was cool. I mean, at this point, I just have to accept that Orun’s leagues ahead of the other Heroes when it comes to power levels.

That’s one of the reasons I was looking forward to him meeting Scion. If there was a chance of a character giving Orun a run for his money, it had to be Scion. And, yay, to ‘Protects His Comrades’ not disappointing. Even though Orun was able to make quick work of the other members in Scion’s group, he was sweating facing her solo.

Scion had the ability to cast a bunch of high-level spells as if they were nothing. According to Orun, it was as if Scion was skipping the necessary steps required to prepare such spells during battle and simply jumping to immediately casting them at her opponent. And though Orun was OP when it came to certain spells, he still wasn’t capable of using high-level magic. He was also surprised to realize that someone of Scion’s stature (she was shorter than he was) could easily block his physical attacks.

Even with Unit 1 arriving on the scene to assist Orun if needed, our lead realized that he wasn’t powerful enough to defeat Scion yet. Frankly, having seen the anime glaze Orun since the beginning, I’m so here for him being aware of the immense threat he was up against. The power of friendship or digging into his resolve to protect others wasn’t going to cut it this time. Hurray!

The only reason the fight ended was due to Scion realizing that her opponent was indeed her childhood friend, Orun, who she had thought had died. She couldn’t help but laugh at fate dealing her such a cruel hand. Orun was alive, but, as of right now, he was siding with the same Heroes whom Scion was meant to kill to save the world.

Though she didn’t give a lot of details about her goal, she did mention something about an “Original” being destroyed and a “Replica” having fallen into the wrong hands. I’m not a fan of narratives deliberately keeping information from viewers by having characters say the most unnatural pieces of dialogue. But hey, it is what it is. I’m just happy about how Orun vs Scion turned out.

With Scion retreating with her party and hoping for Orun to one day understand her motives and remember their shared childhood, I’m looking forward to seeing Scion again in the already confirmed second season.

Jack of All Trades Party of None – Season 2 Announcement via YouTube

News about Orun having defeated the Great Dragon twice spread across the territory. We got to see Oliver training for an upcoming tournament to prove he’s better than Orun. If I were to assume, I think the second season will focus on various adventurers participating in said tournament with the Guildmasters in attendance. There’s something shady going on with the North Guildmaster. He’s quite familiar with Orun.

Orun and the young trio also decided to keep on training after their defeat against Scion’s party. Orun was adamant about such a thing never happening again. Good luck!

The finale also showed a mysterious black-haired girl. I have no idea who she’s supposed to be, but she clearly has something to do with the overall plot. We got a better look at her during the promo video announcing the second season. Scion mentioned how an awful woman was responsible for what had happened in her past regarding Orun and how she was going to make the woman regret being born. The dark-haired girl could be revealed to be the woman Scion meant or be connected to said woman somehow. We shall see.
