Daemons of the Shadow Realm 1×9 and 1×10 Review – “Embrace and Whisper” and “Long-Arm and Long-Leg”

Daemons of the Shadow Realm anime season 1 episode 9, titled ‘Embrace and Whisper’, and episode 10, titled ‘Long-Arm and Long-Leg’, were enjoyable. However, I wasn’t the biggest fan of the pacing.

With episode 8 showing Yuru’s resolve to search for his missing parents, I wasn’t expecting ‘Embrace and Whisper’ to slow things down by having Dera show Yuru and his daemons around town. I mean, sure, it was funny to see Yuru and his daemons react to all of the technology and other modern advancements around them. However, the comedic nature of the pacing really took me by surprise. And when the narrative did return to a more serious note, it didn’t necessarily have to do with the missing parents situation.

While Yuru was busy with Dera, we did get a moment where he recalled having been targeted by a bunch of assassins while growing up in the village. Yuru’s experience was similar to Asa’s experience of being hunted due to the powers the twins were destined to wield. Yuru’s past added more support to why he could relate to Asa living life on the run and why it was important for her to stay under the protection of the Kagemori Clan.

Thinking back and connecting the dots helped Yuru realize that the assassins were likely folks from the outside world because they didn’t have the telltale signs of village-life labor (dirt under the nails, scarred hands, etc.). I mean, I get why Yuru came to such a conclusion and decided to mention it to Dera, but frankly, that particular moment wasn’t necessary. It added nothing to the overall narrative because I think it was obvious that if the assassins were from inside the village, Yuru would have recognized their faces after killing them.

Anyway, over at the Kagemori Clan, I liked the interrogation scene involving the two prisoner mercenaries. That particular scene also had comedic elements to it. However, unlike Yuru’s trip around the city, the interrogation scene felt more related to the pacing of the previous episodes. Also, I’m so here for the type of Clan Head that Gonzo continues to be. Yes, he showed mercy to the prisoners, but his merciful nature was accompanied by an understandable level of punishment, with the two prisoners being made part of the Kagemori Clan’s disposable soldier team. I hope those two survive working for the Kagemori Clan. I kind of like the duo.

A scene I didn’t like was Hikaru’s video call with a member of his manga team. That conversation was portrayed as something shady to make the viewers suspect his motives. It was another scene I could have done without.

Thankfully, ‘Embrace and Whisper’ took a turn for the better when Yuru and Dera realized they were being followed. Due to being people who didn’t run away from a fight, Dera and Yuru lured the three potential threats to Dera’s old house. Dera’s clan has been coming across as a group all about deception and staying low. So, I liked how Dera’s trap played out in a similar manner.

From what I could understand, the way to Dera’s house was dangerous because if you didn’t take the correct route, you could find yourself trapped in a vast grassy field created by daemons belonging to Dera’s clan. A bunch of foes had died in said field. And the three people following Dera and Yuru were going to be next if they didn’t answer Dera’s questions.

What was supposed to be an easy interrogation session turned into a fight for survival when two unexpected daemons, named Tenaga-Ashinaga, showed up inside the field. Dera not realizing the intruders until it was too late was a nice way to show that there were still threats that could surprise someone as cautious as Dera.

‘Long-Arm and Long-Leg’ was an action-filled episode as Dera, Yuru, Left, Right, and the sole survivor of the trio following our heroes tried to survive Tenaga-Ashinaga. I liked how Tenaga-Ashinaga were familiar with Left and Right. Yuru’s daemons had helped a person with the power of Seal to imprison Tenaga-Ashinaga in a mountain hundreds of years ago. So, of course, Tenaga-Ashinaga were ready to get their revenge.

I had been wondering what the power of the Seal was capable of. So, yeah, turns out, Seal can be used to trap daemons in an instant. There’s likely a lot more to it than just that because we know that Asa’s Break ability lets her not only break physical matter but also ideas. I wouldn’t be surprised if Seal also worked on wounds or portals for healing and closing purposes, respectively. Also, with Asa using Break by opening her closed hand, Seal was used by closing an open hand.

The strategy to defeat Tenaga-Ashinaga was enjoyable to watch play out. Dera’s quick thinking of pretending to be Left and Right’s Master was an impressive move. He might come across as careless to offer comedic relief, but Dera is very serious about being Yuru’s guardian.

Yuru faking already possessing the power of Seal was another fun moment and showed Yuru’s battle IQ. I know Yuru’s going to have to die to get Seal for real. But I could tell there was no way he was going to die while fighting the likes of Tenaga-Ashinaga. They were dangerous foes, but they weren’t necessarily important enough to have the honor of killing Yuru, if you get what I mean.

With Tenaga-Ashinaga being defeated through teamwork, we got the reveal that the trio tailing the leads were assigned by Asuma. That dude hasn’t been subtle about being nosy. I don’t think he’s an immediate threat to Yuru and Asa, but he’s definitely planning something to somehow use the twins in the way he wants.

I don’t know if Yuru and Dera will confront Asuma about following them, but at least they know to be on the lookout for white butterflies, as they were being used to relay information back to Asuma.

As for a more intriguing question, someone had recently released Tenaga-Ashinaga from their prison. One would assume anything imprisoned via Seal could only be set free with Break. But nopes, looks like there’s someone powerful out there who isn’t afraid to release powerful daemons and send them after Yuru.
