Author Amber Meyer Teaches “Puppy Love: Life Lessons In Disobedience” – Interview
Welcome, everyone! Today we have author Amber Meyer with us. Check out our interview with the humorous author where we talk about her book Puppy Love: Life Lessons in Disobedience, her inspirations, and more!
Amber Meyer is the author of Puppy Love: Life Lessons in Disobedience. Her book is currently available on Amazon.
Hi, Amber. Please introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m a stay-at-home mom and a self-published author until my husband Chris convinces me to get a real job. I live with my long-suffering husband, my three children, Elly, Evie, and Jackson and three dogs, Mittsy, Lovely (yes, that’s really her name, and I didn’t pick it), and Buddy the miniature Wiener dog. I have a bachelor’s degree in accounting which I refuse to use outside of my pursuit to build a self-publishing empire. Currently, I’m daydreaming about lying on a hammock on a beach with a fruity drink in my hand. If I was really there I would probably spill the drink on myself. My motor skills are not the best.
How long have you been writing for? When did you realize you wanted to become a published author?
I’ve wanted to be an author since I was really small. I wrote a poem on a paper plate when I was eight or nine, and I was hooked.
Are there other authors who’ve inspired your work?
I’m a really big fan of Agatha Christie, but I like to experiment with different styles and techniques. That’s why I started The Write Destination. I feature a different artist every other month and invite fellow writers to try their hand at their own imitation. I’ve found this is a great way to develop my skills.
A lot of authors out there have a writing process. What’s yours like? Do you sit down and write for hours at length, a little bit whenever you have time, or something different?
My twins started full-day pre-k four days a week last fall, so I have much more time to write now. I usually put in about four hours a day four days a week. I’d do more if I could. There are so many stories in me burning to get out. Sometimes I will color in an adult coloring book for 15 or 20 minutes first to get the juices flowing.
Tell us a bit about Puppy Love: Life Lessons in Disobedience. What kind of readers will it appeal to?
Puppy Love is one part spirited self-help book and one part coming-of-middle-age memoir. It’s full of witty humor and unique takes on personal development. Any woman who’s been married and had children and knows what it’s like to try to juggle it all will be able to appreciate this book. I wrote it to both entertain and inspire other women like me.
You’re a self-published author. Any opinions to share about traditional and self-publishing?
I decided to give self-publishing a shot. I like the idea of keeping the rights to my work. From what I understand, even with a traditional contract, you have to have a platform and be able to promote your own book anyway.
Any advice you’d like to give new authors?
Don’t give up on your dreams. The only writers who don’t succeed are the ones that quit. Don’t let that mean little voice in your head talk you out of it. Once you get to a certain point, don’t be afraid to hire an editor to help you wade through the rest. A professional opinion will help you improve faster than anything else.
Are there any upcoming works we should know about?
I’m working on a really exciting spy thriller trilogy right now. The first installment is with my editor as we speak. I can’t wait to share it with everyone. My working title is Stealing the Amber Room. Keep an eye out for it later this summer.
