Boruto: Naruto Next Generations 1×262 Review – “The Princess’s Tea Party”

Boruto anime episode 262, titled ‘The Princess’s Tea Party’, continued with the current arc’s comedic vibe while also allowing Kae to become more open in front of her classmates.

With the previous episode showing Himawari getting to learn about Naruto assigning Kawaki a secret mission to protect Kae at the Ninja Academy, I was kind of okay with the writers not dragging that plot point. Himawari was quick to tell Kawaki that she already knew and was also willing to help him out. While Kawaki refused at first, he had no choice but to accept Himawari’s offer. The dude knew nothing about the etiquettes of attending a tea party.

‘Princess’s Tea Party’ had a bunch of scenes that showed Himawari’s observational skills. I liked how she helped Kawaki figure out who was responsible for ruining the cake that Kae made for everyone. Himawari’s skills are going to come in handy when she decides to pursue a career as an actual ninja. I’m looking forward to seeing how the writers will handle her when she inevitably faces actual danger while trying to help Kawaki keep Kae safe from assassins. I get that Kawaki didn’t want to involve Himawari in the mission because he didn’t want her to get hurt, but we all know things will turn serious soon enough. They have to. Otherwise, what’s the point of such an arc?

Now, I have to say, I was expecting some shadowy organization to try and hurt Kae during her party. But that didn’t happen. We’re two episodes into the arc, and we haven’t seen Kae face any sort of life-threatening danger. So, here’s hoping that changes. Jonin are keeping an eye on Kae when she’s outside. But when if, similar to Kawaki, there’s a kid assassin already present inside the classroom who is waiting for the right opportunity to strike? Hmm. 

Having said that, the current episode did have some stakes even though they were quite manageable. Due to being jealous of the attention Kae was getting, Osuka decided to ruin the cake Kae made. Kawaki and Himawari spent the second half of the episode trying to prove that Osuka was to blame. Again, we got a very low-stakes story, but at least it gave Himawari and Kawaki the chance to work together as a team. And do work well together. Himawari gets Kawaki.

From what I can tell, it does feel like the writers will be using the initial bunch of episodes to introduce viewers to the rest of the young students in Kae’s class. The previous episode showed us Eiki’s personality while the latest installment spent time fleshing out Osuka and her “friend” Neon Asakusa. My prediction is that a bunch of students, if not all, will play a role in helping Kae face certain enemies down the line.

Osuak’s talents seem to be acting. She fake cried in front of Kae and the rest of the kids after she got caught while planning to ruin things for the princess again. As for Neon, her parents were executives at the Kaminarimon Company. So, she had access to various technological prototypes. She used a drone to help Osuka ruin Kae’s cake. I wouldn’t be surprised if Neon uses some kind of device to save Kae’s life in an upcoming episode.

As for Kae’s development, ‘The Princess’s Tea Party’ allowed her to express her true emotions after she saw Osuka continue to blame Neon. There’s a lot of pressure on Kae when it comes to how she should act around others. The poor girl was even hesitant to eat something heavy for lunch in front of the class, resorting to eating a Yakisoba-pan in seclusion. Hopefully, she will relax a bit after finally seeing that her classmates want her to be authentic in front of them.
