Gru and his army of Minions were able to make a bang at the domestic and global box office lists during the Fourth of July holiday window. Despicable Me 4 opened north of $122.6 million during the first five days of release and collected approximately $75 million during the three-day weekend.

With Disney making the big bucks via Inside Out 2 for a couple of weeks now, Universal Pictures/Illumination swooped in with Despicable Me 4 to finally dethrone the House of Mouse. Along with having a healthy domestic opening, the animated family flick collected approximately $106 million from 73 international markets. As of writing this post, the global haul for the movie stands at an estimated $230 million against a reported budget of $100 million.

I did watch the fourth installment in the Despicable Me series and I kind of enjoyed it. I mean, four movies in, it can get tough for the creative team to keep such a franchise going. Giving Gru a baby boy made sense. I also liked how the villain was connected to Gru’s past and why he was considered threatening enough for Gru and his family to go into hiding.

As for the Rotten Tomatoes scores, the Critic Score stands at 52% with the audience giving it 90%, and we all know that Despicable Me is the type of franchise that gives more weight to what the general viewers think. So, it’s all good.

The cast includes Steve Carell, Kristen Wiig, Miranda Cosgrove, Sofía Vergara, Stephen Colbert, Chloe Fineman, Will Ferrell, and more.

Inside Out 2 fell to second place with $30 million for the 3-day. The global haul currently stands at $1.217 billion. A third movie is likely going to be announced soon. A streaming series titled Dream Productions is supposed to hit Disney+ sometime in 2025.

Apparantly, the upcoming animated streaming series will take a look at how dreams impact emotions in the fictional world of Inside Out.

A Quiet Place: Day One came in third with $21 million, helping the domestic haul to reach around $94 million. It has managed to collect $178.2 million at the worldwide box office against a reported production budget of $67 million. So, yay! I’m just happy for Lupita Nyong’o.

New release MaXXXine debuted at fourth place with $6.7 million for the three-day. Starring Mia Goth, it’s the third installment in the X film series by Ti West.

I found it to be okay. I do feel people who have kept up with the franchise will appreciate it more compared to those who decided to watch such a slasher thriller offering without prior knowledge of Maxine’s past (she’s been through a lot).

Along with Goth, the cast includes Elizabeth Debicki, Moses Sumney, Michelle Monaghan, Bobby Cannavale, Halsey, Lily Collins, Giancarlo Esposito, and Kevin Bacon.

The Rotten Tomatoes score is 76% by Critics and 79% from the Audience. Seems like an even enough split.
