Iyanu 1×09 Review: “The Source Part I”

Nuro (Femi Sowooli) and The Fallen One (Lord Frank) in “The Source Part I.”

Iyanu works to master her abilities and overcome her doubts on a perilous journey in “The Source Part I.”

Though Iyanu (Serah Johnson) completed a series of trials in “The Sacred,” she has a lot more to prove in “The Source Part I.” On her journey towards the source of her powers, she and Ekun (Babajide Oyekunle) continue to be tested while battles break out elsewhere in the region.

The forces of the mountain try to stop Iyanu from reaching the source, manifesting in attacking creatures and whispers meant to seed doubts in Iyanu. Though the forces are nearly successful, Iyanu is able to communicate with Ekun telepathically and uses her memories of Mama Sewa and the thoughts of her friends and family to master her abilities and overcome the obstacles in a powerful moment.

Down in the Sacred Settlements, Nuro (Femi Sowooli) and The Fallen One (Lord Frank) arrive and attempt to stop Iyanu from reaching the source. Olori (Adesua Etomi-Wellington), Kanfo (Blossom Chukwujekwu), Biyi (Okey Jude), and Toye (Samuel Kugbiyi) work together to buy Iyanu time. Toye comes up with a plan to stop the advancing army, which succeeds with the help of Biyi and Olori. With Biyi and Toye previously at odds with each other, it’s great to see them put aside their differences and work together.

Meanwhile, Nuro confronts Kanfo about betraying him. He manages to defend his decision and holds his own against the corrupted general of The Deep’s army. Kanfo has evolved the most since the beginning of the series, and his improved attitude towards Toye and a hint of a potentially interesting past make him a more interesting character than he previously appeared to be.

Back in Elu, the corrupted animals and armies set the city in their sights. The chaos brought forth by the attack is intense, though the sight of a corrupted tortoise slowly entering the city adds a bit of much-needed levity to the situation. Uwa’s (Oluwafemi Olugbade) impassioned speech urging everyone to work together to deal with the threat initially falls flat, but the citizens eventually come around with some encouragement.

As Iyanu and Ekun reach the source at the top of the mountain at the end of “The Source Part I,” a woman comes forth claiming to be Iyanu’s mother Dara (Sisan Victor-Woko). It’s an interesting twist to cap off an enjoyable episode, and I’m eager to see what comes of it. With Iyanu officially renewed for another season and two movies, there is a lot more to discover with Iyanu, her allies, and her world.
