Planeteers Rejoice! “Captain Planet” Issue 1 to Debut This April
The Captain Planet fandom has some new content to look forward to. From Dynamite Entertainment and Warner Bros. Discovery Global Consumer Product, Captain Planet issue 1 will be released on April 23, 2025.
The upcoming Captain Planet comic book is from writer David Pepose with art by Eman Casallos. The debut in April marks the first Captain Planet series in three decades. So, yeah, as a fan of the animated series, you can tell I’m quite excited to consume new content set in said IP. It’s been a while.
“Every comic creator has their own personal white whale — that singular property they’ve been itching to make their mark on — and for more than a decade Captain Planet has been mine,” shared writer David Pepose.
Pepose does come across as a fan and I’m excited to see what he has planned as the series continues.
The premise of Captain Planet is an easy one to understand. Sensing the Earth is in danger, five teenagers from across the world are given five magical rings with elemental powers (Earth, Fire, Wind, Water, and Heart) by Gaia. Combining the power of the rings summons Earth’s greatest champion Captain Planet.
The animated show focused on the teens learning how to use their powers and working as a team. Their adventures were about putting a stop to eco-terrorists and others who wanted to harm the planet for their own gain. The narrative also talked about addiction and other societal issues being faced by the youth. The main animated series debuted back in September 1990 and concluded in September 1995 after running for more than 100 episodes.
For those interested, I recently reviewed the complete Captain Planet animated series on DVD.
As for the first issue come April, the narrative seems to be an introduction to the IP to new readers while appealing to older fans as it will be about the chosen teens trying to function as a newly formed team in a trial-by-fire experience after Gaia gets kidnapped. The inexperienced Planeteers will need to learn quickly if they are to stand against the well-financed might of Lucian Plunder.
We have Kwame from Ghana who wields the power of Earth. Kwame is supposed to be the leader. Wheeler is from the United States and has the Fire Power Ring. Linka’s origins are in Russia and she controls Wind. I’m not digging Linka’s design, but let’s see how it works as the story unfolds. I mean, Linka’s one of my favorite characters and is, more or less, second-in-command. So, yeah, I have strong opinions about her.
Gi traces back to South Korea and commands Water. The fifth and youngest member Ma-Ti is from Brazil and uses the power of Heart (or Empathy).
Also, giving the titular hero a beard is definitely a choice. Certain fans do like a Daddy. Ha!
The April 23, 2025, release is timed to Earth Day. Dynamite also announced that Captain Planet issues will be printed on 70% recycled paper, as with all of the publisher’s periodicals.
The first issue will feature variants by Mark Spears; Christian Ward; and Ben Oliver. The first six issues will also feature a special connecting set of covers by Jae Lee and June Chung.
