“Señorita 89” Gets Official Trailer & Key Art Before February Release!

Pantaya has a new thriller series that you should know about. Señorita 89 is an original series focusing on the dark world behind attractive beauty pageants. Señorita 89 will be released in the U.S. and Puerto Rico come February 27, 2022.

I have watched a couple of shows available on Pantaya, a Spanish-language streaming platform. I really enjoyed De Brutas, Nada and Game of Keys (El Juego de las Llaves). Both shows have queer representation. And having gone through the promotional content for Señorita 89, it looks like this show will include queer representation, too.

Set in the glamor of 1980’s Mexico, the series is ready to explore certain real-world issues that many still currently go through, including sexual harassment in the workplace and the standards of beauty forced upon women.

The narrative follows Concepción (Ilse Salas), the matriarch of the most important beauty pageant in the country. She, along with her team of expert makeup artists, trainers, and surgeons, invite 32 finalists to her estate, La Encantada. While on the premises, the contestants get to experience a 3-month hard training until they reach the Miss Mexico pageant.

However, everything isn’t what it seems as there’s a dark truth behind all of the clothes and makeup. The story will see the contestants empowering each other through the ordeal and uniting forces to leave the contest alive.

“Everything that scandalizes us today, in 1989 was allowed… the reification of women’s bodies, sexual harassment in the workplace, the abuse of power relations by men and the idea of ​​thinking of women as someone else’s property, with all the implications that this has,” stated Director and Writer Lucia Puenzo. “Framed in the bestial back room of beauty pageants, SEÑORITA 89 comes to talk about the women who began to shake that world… and to blow it up from within.”

Filmed during the pandemic, the first season will include 8 episodes. It has been executive produced by Academy Award winners, Pablo and Juan de Dios Larrain, along with Ángela Poblete and Mariane Hartard from Fabula and Christian Vesper at Fremantle, written by Lucía Puenzo, María Renée Prudencio and Tatiana Mereñuk, and directed by Nicolás Puenzo, Sílvia Quer and Jimena Montemayor.

Along with Ilse Salas, the cast also includes Ximena Romo, Bárbara López, Natasha Dupeyrón, Leidi Gutiérrez, Coty Camacho, along with Edwarda Gurrola, Marcelo Alonso, Juan Manuel Bernal, Luis Ernesto Franco, Ianis Guerrero, with the special participation of Ari Brickman.

The first two episodes of Señorita 89 will be available on Pantaya on February 27, 2022. A new episode will be released weekly on Sunday. The entire first season will be ready to binge on April 10, 2022.

I’m quite intrigued by Señorita 89. And while I still need to decide if I will view the series weekly or binge in April, I’ll definitely try and watch it!
