Today we have with us paranormal mystery writer Susanne Leist. She’s the author of the very entertaining “The Dead Game”. Check out our exclusive interview where we get to know more about the author and her book.

Tell us a bit about yourself.

Hi! My name is Susanne Leist. I graduated with an M.B.A. in Finance. I’ve worked in budgeting and financial analysis. However, my greatest love has always been reading. One day, I decided to use my over-active imagination and write a book. Seven years later, The Dead Game was born, and I’m proud of it.

When did you realize you wanted to become an author?

I’ve been reading murder mysteries and thrillers ever since I was a teenager. I’ve read all types of mysteries, from Agatha Christie to Sherlock Holmes. In recent years, I began to read paranormal mysteries. These books bring fantasy and the surreal to the simple murder mystery.

It’s hard to find books that combine the paranormal with mystery. That’s why I decided to write a paranormal murder mystery of my own. It’s the type of book that I search for and love to read.  My book, The Dead Game, has dead bodies and suspects like a traditional murder mystery. It also has humans, vampires, and vampire derivatives, and don’t forget the haunted house—we must have one of these.

Any other authors who have inspired your work?

My favorite author is Brad Meltzer. It’s fun and easy to read his books. His words flow smoothly and hold on to my attention. I enjoy his characters. He also weaves his extensive knowledge of Washington into the complex story lines.

What can you tell us about your book ‘The Dead Game‘? What kind of readers will it appeal to?

My book, The Dead Game, is a paranormal mystery/thriller. It takes place in a small town called Oasis on the coast of Florida. During the day, the town is a paradise for its residents and abundant tourists with its picturesque streets, wide-sand beach, and warm waters. However, at night, the town turns dark and deadly. Dark shadows roam the streets, tourists begin to disappear, and bodies turn up dead on the beach. The evil in this town revolves around a deserted house. The younger residents are invited to a mysterious party at End House, and that is when the fun and games begin.

My audience is anyone who enjoys mystery and the unknown; anyone who is ready to use his or her imagination to explore new possibilities.

What do you find interesting about the genre you write in?

The paranormal calls out to me. I love haunted houses, creepy settings, and feelings of being stalked… To me, this entails a killer or villain. Paranormal stories have villains and dead bodies; appealing to my love of murder mysteries. These stories could also have romance or horror. I love this genre where anything is possible.

Would you like to share your thoughts regarding self and traditional publishing?

I used Outskirts Press to self-publish my book. The editor corrected about half the typos. I was determined to make my book the best it could be. I was on a mission to make it leaner and meaner. I read editing, grammar books, articles, and so on. The story remained the same but the words brought it to life. I wonder if an editor and a traditional publisher could have helped me achieve my potential. It might have been a journey that I had to take on my own.

What advice would you like to give to writers who have just started?

It is important for an author to have everything in place before launching his or her book. I learned the hard way after I self-published. Blogs, websites, and social sites like Google and Twitter should be ready and waiting. Summaries and bios should also be prepared in advance. After the book is released, it should be announced everywhere with bold pictures and words. People will be ready and eager to read it. That’s my goal for my next book, which will be the second book in The Dead Game series.
