Fathom Fright Nights Heading Your Way

Spooky season is just around the corner, and Fathom Events has you covered with horror films both classic and new.

Starting September 3, Fathom Fright Fest is a creepy lineup of movies all designed to scare, and include two movies from horror mastermind John Carpenter. The festival starts off with the 35th anniversary screening of They Live, the cult classic starring Roddy Piper with sunglasses that show the true evils of the world.

Following that is the 40th anniversary screening of Christine. Based on the Stephen King novel of the same name, the movie is about a car that is a killer. Both screenings will include a special message from Carpenter made exclusively for Fathom.

Other anniversary screenings during the festival include the 50th-anniversary screening of The Exorcist, which includes the extended director’s cut with footage not previously seen in theatres. This includes an alternate ending.

Additionally, the 20th anniversary of Rob Zombie’s cult House of 1,000 Corpses is included, with an exclusive featurette from Zombie discussing his directorial vision for the movie.

The festival ends with the 60th-anniversary screening of The Birds. Alfred Hitchcock’s classic film stars Tippi Hedren and the screening includes an introduction by film critic Leonard Maltin.

But anniversary screenings aren’t the only offerings during Fright Fest 2023. It also serves up two (relatively) new horror movies. On September 21, see 2022’s Shaky Shivers, a send-up of 80s horror movies. Starring Brooke Markham and Vyvy Nguyen, it takes place at a summer camp and involves werewolves, zombies, and cultists. The movie is directed by Suang Kang.

Finally, on October 19, the festival also includes Onyx the Fortuitous and the Talisman of Souls, a 2023 movie from Andrew Bowser, starring Jeffrey Combs and Barbara Crampton. Onyx is an aspiring occultist and is invited to a ritual. Of course, a battle for the soul is on the board.

If you’re a fan of horror films, this lineup is awesome. It’s eclectic enough to have something for every type of horror movie lover. The two new movies sound like the perfect mix of comedy and horror which is exactly the type I like. Meanwhile, the anniversary screenings aren’t your ‘typical’ classics (well, maybe The Birds is). Most of these I haven’t seen but are on my watch list: this might very well be the proverbial straw that gets me to knock them off said list.
