Iyanu 2×04 Review: “The Duel”

Iyanu (Serah Johnson) in “The Duel.”

Iyanu struggles against a tougher opponent as she faces off with Queen Adura for the first time in “The Duel.”

After accepting Queen Adura’s (Faith Gesiere-Agua) challenge at the end of “The Offer,” Iyanu (Serah Johnson) faces a difficult battle in “The Duel.” The episode opens with both sides being confident about winning the match as their allies observe. However, Iyanu gets more than she bargained for as Adura uses her mastery of multiple fighting styles to best our lead.

The rest of Team Chosen can only watch and provide encouragement as Iyanu and Adura face off. Though Biyi (Okey Jude) asks Toye (Samuel Kugbiyi) for help with his newly activated beads during the battle, the primary focus of the episode remains on Iyanu and Adura’s battle. Some brief scenes of Elu’s leadership discussing and preparing for a potential invasion from the People of the Deep break up the intense action sequences, but the episode is overall fast-paced.

The fight between Iyanu and Adura lives up to the hype with its intense action and skilled combatants. Once Iyanu and Adura’s abilities are introduced to the battle, the action ratchets up further. Though Adura is the winner of the round, Iyanu puts up quite a fight as the two share taunts and blows.

Ekun prevents Adura from striking Iyanu with a final blow, and Team Chosen goes on the run while Adura and the People of the Deep chase them. Olori (Adesua Etomi-Wellington) uses her abilities to temporarily halt Adura’s pursuit, and the group can take a much-needed rest. Once they are finally able to catch their breath, Iyanu has a nice emotional moment with Olori as the two reconcile.

As Adura and the People of the Deep catch up to them at the end of “The Duel,” Team Chosen escapes in a nearby ancient aircraft that Iyanu activates with her abilities. With Iyanu and Adura’s first face-off complete, it will be exciting to see how Iyanu advances her skills and abilities to stop Adura and the People of the Deep the next time they confront each other.
