Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix, Tomb Raider and More Animated Series at Netflix Drop 01
The Netflix Drop 01 animation event had a whole lot for animation fans to be excited about. From Tomb Raider to Devil May Cry and more, let’s go over the awesome announcements!
With Castlevania: Nocturne ready to debut on Netflix come September 28, 2023, the streaming juggernaut made the very intense first seven minutes of the premiere episode available to fans online. As someone who really enjoyed watching the previous Castlevania animated series (July 2017 to May 2021), I’m looking forward to what the continuation will have to offer. Judging from the promo material, the characters look interesting and the animation seems to be as action-packed as ever. I’m a sucker for supernatural battles that include traditional weapons and sorcery.
The controversial Masters of the Universe: Revelation animated series by Kevin Smith (that debuted back in 2021) will continue to live on via a kind-of reboot. While the upcoming Master of the Universe: Revolution doesn’t have a specific release date yet (it’s supposed to debut sometime next year), you can see the first look below.
I don’t want to be mean or anything, but I can’t help but laugh a bit at how quickly the creative team seems to have pivoted after the disaster that was MotU: Revelation. Let’s see what the fandom thinks of the upcoming series.
Another animated series that will premiere sometime next year is Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft. In this series, Lara has been voiced by geek-favorite Hayley Atwell. The first-look trailer does seem to take inspiration from the recent Tomb Raider video games featuring a more serious tone instead of the campiness and sex appeal that made the older games iconic. Let’s see how this particular iteration goes down with fans at large.
Yet another animated series releasing sometime in 2024, we have Devil May Cry. The series features the return of Dante and while plot details are scarce, Adi Shankar (Castlevania) serves as the showrunner with the visuals being done by Studio Mir. The Devil May Cry video games are known for being sexy and bloody. So I have my fingers crossed that the animated adaptation delivers.
The Netflix Drop 01 event also talked about new Sonic Prime content dropping “soon”.
As for animated content that you can enjoy this year, along with Castlevania: Nocturne, we also have Blue Eye Samurai. Releasing on November 3, 2023, the show is led by a sword-wielding character named Mizu.
The animated Scott Pilgrim Takes Off also got a new promotional clip. And while I’m happy for Scott Pilgrim fans, certain folks have been tweeting about not vibing with the animation style and voice work. The series will debut on November 17, 2023.
Talking about an animated project that had my Twitter timeline on fire, we have Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix. Premiering on October 19, 2023, this series promises to be filled with Easter Eggs, comedic, action-packed, and yes, it has queer characters in it.
Created by Adi Shankar, the series is based on the 2013 video game Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon.
I want to watch it right now!
