“Lockwood & Co.” Fan Campaign Seeks to Revive Cancelled Series

The fan campaign to save the cancelled Netflix series Lockwood & Co. combines typical renewal campaign tactics and fan projects.

When I attended Fan Expo Philadelphia a few weeks ago, I saw many of the typical artist alley and exhibitor booths that populate the show floor of any convention. I was surprised to see a table for a fan revival campaign, particularly when so many of these campaigns are typically only found online. “Save Lockwood & Co.” is a fan-run campaign seeking to revive the one season Netflix series Lockwood & Co., a ghostly series based on the novels by Jonathan Stroud.

The series centers on Lucy (Ruby Stokes), a girl with unique abilities who joins the titular Lockwood & Co., a ghost-hunting agency run by Anthony (Cameron Chapman) and George (Ali Hadji-Heshmati). The eight-episode series was a fun ride filled with compelling characters and interesting ghosts. Unfortunately, the series was canceled shortly after its debut despite ending on a minor cliffhanger.

The fan campaign, established shortly after the announcement of the series’ cancellation, doubles as both a renewal campaign and a space for the fandom to gather. In addition to the convention appearances, the campaign has also hosted fandom projects, including a “virtual thinking cloth” to help fans express their love of the series and real-world meetups to help bring awareness to the series and for the fandom to celebrate the series together. The project is an extension of the Lockwood & Co. fan site, “Lock Nation,” which also celebrates the fandom of both the television series and the book series.

As with most renewal campaigns, “Save Lockwood & Co.” features two petitions, each with over 50,000 signatures. In addition, the campaign also features coordinated e-mail and postcard campaigns to reach out to other streaming services to convince them to pick up the series.

While there are numerous campaigns to revive canceled series in today’s age of fast cancellations, with varying degrees of success, the “Save Lockwood & Co.” campaign combines both virtual and real-world tactics to try and bring awareness to the series. Time will tell if the campaign is ultimately successful, but the campaign has brought many fans together to celebrate both the television and book series, regardless.
