Netflix has released the official trailer for the upcoming queer Polish thriller Operation Hyacinth. The upcoming murder mystery will be available on the streaming service come October 13, 2021.
Directed by Piotr Domalewski, the trailer for Operation Hyacinth is quite intense. It opens up in an interrogation room where queer men are being harshly questioned. Set in the ’80s, you can just feel the homophobia emanate from the footage.
For those who don’t know, the premise of this movie is based on a real-life event. There actually was a secret mass operation of the same name by the Polish communist police during 1985-1987. The goal was to create a national database of Polish homosexuals and those in touch with such individuals. The operation led to approximately 11,000 people being registered.
The lead of the film is a young police officer named Robert (Tomasz Zietek) working on a murder case that has to do with a person going around killing gay men. During the investigation, Robert meets Arek (Hubert Milkowski) and uses him as an informant. Of course, judging by the trailer and promo material, the professional relationship between them starts to become something else. You can see a very conflicted Robert in the trailer. Even when the investigation is closed by the higher-ups, Robert continues his pursuit to find the killer.
I’m not sure if Robert’s supposed to be bisexual or gay. Perhaps I’m reading too much into it and Robert is an ally who just wants to help? I doubt it, but I guess we will find out about Rober’s sexuality soon enough.
Here’s the trailer!
As for the reason I decided to click on this trailer when it appeared on my YouTube feed, well, the word Hyacinth reminded me of Apollo’s boyfriend and the Thumbnail kind of looked queer. I don’t know if I can explain it properly. It’s just that, in my opinion, I do feel I have a very sensitive gaydar. And so, I decided to watch the trailer. And it’s a good thing I did and got to know about this upcoming movie.
I am definitely interested in watching this film.
