Proceeds from IDW “Godzilla vs. Los Angeles” to Benefit Binc’s Response to LA Wildfires
With the release of the upcoming Godzilla vs. Los Angeles issue 1 drawing near, IDW has shared that all proceeds from the comic book will go to the Book Industry Charitable Foundation to help support those in need after the unfortunate wildfires in Los Angeles.
The anthology series about Godzilla wreaking havoc across America was first announced during NYCC. The first book in the series is going to be Godzilla vs. Chicago and it will debut this February 26, 2025. However, with the LA wildfires occurring, it made sense for IDW to comment on the tragic incident and how it will handle the planned release of the upcoming Godzilla vs. Los Angeles come April 30, 2025.
According to the letter by IDW (shared by IGN), the company stated that it understood “that sensitivity and support are paramount, especially during challenging times.”
Planned since last July, Godzilla vs. Los Angeles will be a 40-page anthology offering and will feature the creativity of “some beloved” LA-based writers and artists. IDW recognized “the unfortunate coincidence of our comic’s theme with the recent devastating fires in Los Angeles.”
As the long-running Godzilla IP has “served as a metaphor for the impact of unprecedented tragedies stemming from human actions or natural causes” IDW has no intention of capitalizing on the recent events and would like “to explore themes that resonate with and reflect the human condition.”
That is why IDW decided to support the community by donating all proceeds from the sales of Godzilla vs. Los Angeles issue 1 to the Binc Foundation. The support is meant to directly help restore and rebuild bookstores and comic shops affected by the wildfires.
IDW concluded the letter by stating it appreciated the support from the retailers and partners to bring stories to life, “even when art unintentionally mirrors reality.”
As for the LA-based creators featured in the upcoming book, there’s Gabriel Hardman (Green Lantern: Earth One), J. Gonzo (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles), Dave Baker (TMNT: Black, White and Green), and Nicole Goux (Shadow of the Batgirl).
I haven’t been personally impacted by the LA wildfires so I don’t have the footing to share an authoritative or valid enough opinion on the matter. However, I do get why IDW Publishing released such a letter to announce how profits from the upcoming book will be used to help the comic book community recover.
