The live-action adaptation of Surfside Girls will debut on Apple TV+ come August 19, 2022. Based on the graphic novel series by Kim Dwinell, the show is about two young girls getting involved with ghosts and solving mysteries.

As someone who has read the Surfside Girls graphic novels (IDW Publishing), I’m kind of looking forward to watching the live-action adaptation. The story from the graphic novels does skew younger, but the premise is quite interesting. And judging by the promotional material, the TV series is definitely kid-centric and going for a family-friendly vibe.

The upcoming streaming series has been written by WGA Award winner and Daytime Emmy Award nominee May Chan. The leads are two best friends named Sam and Jade. The first book in the series dealt with 12-year-old Sam getting to learn about the existence of ghosts and how her destiny’s connected to Danger Point. As Sam tries to solve a local mystery to protect the land the ghosts call home, Jade’s destiny also gets intertwined with it all.

However, having watched the trailer for the first season, it looks like the creative team will be changing stuff around from the first book. Sam and Jade will still solve a supernatural mystery and get to meet a ghost pirate boy, but the situation they are in seems different. The first season is supposed to have 10 episodes.

Surfside Girls stars Miya Cech, YaYa Gosselin, and Spencer Hermes-Rebello. The series has been produced by Endeavor Content and IDW Entertainment, and co-developed, written and executive produced by Chan, who also serves as showrunner.

Paul Stupin serves as executive producer. Alex Diaz and Julie Sagalowsky Diaz co-developed and serve as writers and executive producers. America Young directed and executive produced the first two episodes. Lydia Antonini also serves as an executive producer. Paul Davidson and Jeff Brustrom serve as executive producers on behalf of IDW.

Surfside Girls joins other live-action TV adaptations of IDW’s titles including Locke & Key, Wynonna Earp, V-Wars, and October Faction.
