Disney’s animated movie Zootopia 2 hopped right to the top of the box office with an impressive estimated $156 million over Thanksgiving weekend. We are getting a third movie for sure!

I understand where certain people are coming from when they share their dislike of Hollywood focusing on sequel after sequel instead of putting more effort into original stories. However, Disney deciding to churn out a bunch of sequels for Frozen, Moana, Toy Story, and Lilo and Stitch makes sense considering how much money there is to make. As of writing this post, Zootopia 2 has amassed more than $556 million worldwide against a reported production budget of an estimated $150 million. No studio is going to give up on releasing sequels of famous intellectual properties with that much cash up for grabs.

Zootopia 2 is on its way to easily surpass $1 billion globally, and with how things ended in the latest installment, we are going to get a Zootopia 3.

And you know what? I’m not against it.

I do think certain properties benefit from continuous storytelling on the big screen. Zootopia is one such property from back in 2016 and was able to make $1.025 billion. There’s still so much to explore in that particular world, and I want the creative team to do just that while developing the relationship dynamic between Judy Hopps (Ginnifer Goodwin) and Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman).

Directed by Jared Bush and Byron Howard from a screenplay by Bush, Zootopia 2 has Judy and Nick working together as a team to solve a case involving the creation of Zootopia. The narrative introduces reptiles and touches on real-world issues surrounding commercial development, theft, and propaganda. The message about the importance of choosing to help someone, regardless of the result, was quite potent.

As for the rest of the box office, Wicked 2 fell about 57% to take the second spot on the list with an estimated $62.8 million for the 3-Day window. The 5-Day Thanksgiving weekend has it at about $93 million.

The film has grossed approximately $393 million globally. With how things are going, I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s unable to match the impressive haul of its predecessor. And that’s okay. Bring up what I have mentioned before, Wicked 2 was always going to be a tougher sell than the first chapter.

The new releases were Eternity and Hamnet. The fantasy romcom Eternity stars Elizabeth Olsen in a movie where she has to choose between two men, whom she loves, to spend her afterlife with. It collected almost $5.2 million for the 5-Day timeframe.

Hamnet stars Paul Mescal. Directed by Chloé Zhao, it’s a retelling of Anne Hathaway and William Shakespeare’s marriage and what they experienced after the death of their son Hamnet, and how the trauma inspired Hamlet. It was able to make almost $1.3 million for the 5-Day.
