“Pitch Perfect” Fandom Unites for Ukraine

Pitch Perfect Fandom Drive

Fans of a capella music movie trilogy Pitch Perfect use their passion to raise money for Ukraine through fanworks of all kinds.

As the world turns its eyes to the horrors of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, parts of fandom have stepped up to help support Ukrainians in the crisis. Fandom has a history of philanthropy, ranging from charity auctions such as Fandom Trumps Hate and Fandom Cares to individual commissions by fans to raise money for various causes.

Fans of the Pitch Perfect trilogy, a series of movies about a female a capella group and starring a talented, predominantly female cast, have banded together for the latest fandom philanthropic effort to support Ukraine. Titled the Pitch Perfect Fandom Drive and hosted primarily on Tumblr, the hosts recruited fans interested in making a difference to offer Pitch Perfect-based commissions in exchange for donations for various Ukrainian organizations. The Pitch Perfect Fandom Drive has previously raised around $4,000 in 2020 for organizations promoting racial equality and reactivated its fundraising efforts in light of the crisis in Ukraine.

The campaign was launched on March 2, 2022, and has thirty contributors signed up to offer all types of fanworks in exchange for donations covering a variety of organizations. At last reporting, the drive has raised about $1,500 in its efforts and will be open for donations until the end of March. With proof of receipt, donors can commission any of the listed contributors to create the fanwork of their dreams.

A couple of fanworks, mostly fan fiction, have already been posted for donors. While the fandom’s main ship, non-canon (though heavily queerbaited) femslash ship Bechloe (Beca Mitchell and Chloe Beale) will likely be featured in many of the fanworks, there are and likely will be more of other fanworks showcasing some of the fandom’s other characters and ships.

While it remains to be seen how much money will ultimately be raised, it’s impressive to see the Pitch Perfect Fandom Drive continue the tradition of fandom philanthropic efforts. Though Pitch Perfect isn’t a fandom juggernaut compared to fandoms such as the Marvel Cinematic Universe or Teen Wolf, the success of the drive proves that even smaller fandoms can make a big difference in the effort to make the world a better place.
