“SK8 the Infinity” Will Return for Season 2

Perhaps one of the most popular anime of 2021 (at least according to my Tumblr dashboard) was SK8 the Infinity, the story of a no-holds-barred skateboard race called “S” and the young men who compete in it. A new project for the anime was announced in July, and it was just revealed earlier today, as part of ∞WEEK, that the new project is not only an OVA but also a second season of the series!

∞WEEK was announced back in June, and it launched on August 8 with a special illustration from Ryo Fujiwara in honor of Reki’s birthday. A few other illustrations were released throughout the week, with the celebration culminating in an event held in Okinawa, where the anime is set. The event, held at the Palet Civic Theater, was attended by voice actors Tasuku Hatanaka (Reki) and Chiaki Kobyashi (Langa).

It was at this event that both the OVA and the second season were announced in the below video, as a nice little exclamation point on the week.

The following staff from the first season are confirmed to return: director Hiroko Utsumi, series script supervisor  Ichiro Okouchi, character designer Michinori Chiba, and animation studio BONES.

SK8 the Infinity is an original anime, as in it wasn’t an adaptation of a manga. It’s pretty rare for an original anime to get a second season (I mean, look how long it’s taken to get that promised Yuri on Ice movie), but it sold very well on Blu-ray and has proven to be extremely popular internationally.

There is the question of what the plot of season 2 will be. Season 1 was a complete, contained story that seemingly tied up its variously threads. We don’t know anything yet about what characters may be returning, although one would hope that they bring back the original cast. And with the director and script supervisor from season 1 returning, I have a lot of faith that they know what they’re doing.

I am really excited for this! After the disappointment of Haikyuu!! not getting a season 5, this is not a project I expected to get more of. But I, like many people, fell in love with the anime pretty quickly. Please make it even more gay, I am begging you.

The first season of the anime is currently available to stream -both subbed and dubbed – on Crunchyroll, after previously debuting on Funimation.
