Queer Pakistani Drama “Guru” Gets Official Trailer Before June Release!
The official trailer for the upcoming queer Pakistani drama Guru has been released. And from what I can tell, the creative team is ready to tackle a bunch of heavy subjects. Starring Ali Rehman Khan, Guru will be released by Express Entertainment on June 7, 2023.
I have been keeping an eye on Guru after watching the recent teaser trailer. Ali Rehman Khan plays the titular character who finds herself stuck in a predicament after refusing an abandoned baby from a trash heap. Khan’s character has been described to be intersex. And while I understand Pakistan’s entertainment industry not casting actual intersex talent in the role, the trailer does make it seem that Khan approached playing such a character with empathy and respect. Also, I have my fingers crossed that actual talent from such a minority community were given a platform in Guru, whether it’s for a supporting role or even background.
The trailer opened with a sinister shot of a pregnant woman being threatened by her husband about how he wants her to give birth to a son. The woman’s clearly concerned about the safety of her unborn child. It’s made obvious that she doesn’t mother a son and that baby ends up being thrown out, only to be found by Khan’s Guru. Apparently, Guru will try to reunite the kid with her mother, but things won’t go as planned.
The narrative will deal with sexism, misogyny, homophobia, and more. And I’m here for it!
The episodic drama series Guru will premiere in Pakistan on June 7, 2023. New episodes will be released every Wednesday at 8 pm PKT. It should be available to international viewers via Express Entertainment’s YouTube channel.
I do plan to cover this show. So keep an eye out for my reaction and review videos over on our The Geekiary YouTube channel.
For those wondering, another Pakistani drama, Khuda Mera Bhi Hai (God Is Mine Too), also dealt with an intersex lead character back in 2016. However, the issues that will be tackled in Guru appear very different, especially considering how the lead in Khuda Mera Bhi Hai was from a privileged background and found the support they needed from their family.
In contrast, this particular lead seems to be struggling to make ends meet and is also responsible for a bunch of other intersex and transgender members of her chosen family. For those who might not know, the term ‘Guru’ (along with the usual meanings) in the current context also means being the Mother of a House.
