Iconic “RuPaul’s Drag Race UK” Season 1 Winner The Vivienne Has Passed Away

As a fan of The Vivienne, I’m writing this post with a heavy heart. I would have typed it out sooner, but… sigh. The iconic winner of the first season of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK has passed away.

The Vivienne aka James Lee Williams has died at 32 years old. Their publicist Simon Jones shared the statement online and it understandably took the fandom by surprise. The reason for death wasn’t mentioned and the statement made it clear that further details won’t be released.

Frankly, I’m kind of glad to see that most fans are supporting each other by celebrating the legacy of the famous Drag Queen instead of coming up with conspiracy theories regarding her fate.

The Vivienne got on the world’s radar when she participated in RuPaul’s Drag Race UK Season 1 back in October 2019. Her charisma, uniqueness, nerve, and talent were evident right from the beginning and she went on to be crowned the first winner of the UK-based spin-off in November 2019. From there her career continued to grow and reach newer heights, quickly cementing her as one of the well-known queens from the Drag Race franchise.

After her win she returned as a guest on RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 12, RuPaul’s Drag Race UK Season 2 and Season 4, and participated as a contestant on RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars Season 7.

The official Twitter account for the RuPaul’s Drag Race franchise tweeted out a message regarding The Vivienne’s passing. The statement highlighted her “talent, humor, and dedication to the art of drag” being an inspiration and how she “embodied what it means to be a true champion.”

Drag Race mainstay Michelle Visage also took to socials to share a tribute. Others who knew The Vivienne also shared their thoughts.

The Vivienne will continue to be remembered and her legacy will live on, serving as an inspiration to many across the globe.
