Iyanu 1×06 Review: “The Walk of Death”

Team Chosen hits a rough patch as things grow more dire in Elu in “The Walk of Death.”
After the brutal assault of the Riverlands in “The People of the Deep,” Iyanu (Serah Johnson) and Team Chosen must keep moving in “The Walk of Death.” The journey towards the source of Iyanu’s abilities is fraught with peril and the team ends up on a particularly rough path that nobody has reportedly survived.
The stretch referred to as “the walk of death” certainly lives up to the name. It is not long before Iyanu and her companions are surrounded by hordes of corrupted animals, and they chase the group through the land in a thrilling sequence. As Ekun (Babajide Oyekunle) tires out, Iyanu figures out that they can’t outrun the animals and works with Biyi (Okey Jude) and Toye (Samuel Kugbiyi) to maneuver into a nearby cave.
The victory is short-lived as Team Chosen quickly realizes that they are now trapped inside the mysterious cavern. While the team dynamics in the episode start strong in the beginning with Iyanu and Toye trying to cheer up Biyi in the aftermath of losing Mama Sewa, the tired and frustrated kids begin to fight amongst themselves. The extended arguments affect the episode’s pacing, but the unique visual moments to try and liven up the arguing make the sequences more enjoyable to watch.

After the group finally goes to sleep, Ekun speaks to Iyanu in her dreams. Iyanu is excited by the possibility of Ekun being able to speak, but there is no clear confirmation of whether Ekun can speak outside of dreams. Either way, it will be interesting to see Ekun’s personality begin to develop as he grows closer to Iyanu and the team settles their differences and learns to work together.
Back in Elu, a newly escaped Olori (Adesua Etomi-Wellington) trades evidence of Nuro’s (Femi Sowooli) crimes in exchange for passage out of the city. Though she successfully secures an exit strategy, it may be too late as The Fallen One (Lord Frank), the entity possessing Nuro, has commanded him to possess the armies of Elu, and the red light of corruption emits from the palace in the closing moments of “The Walk of Death.”
