From Universal Pictures Home Entertainment, the live-action How to Train Your Dragon movie is available right now on Digital (for purchase and rent). It will be getting a 4K UHD and Blu-ray home release come August 12, 2025.

The home release of How to Train Your Dragon or HtTYD will be accompanied by more than 75 minutes of extra content for fans to enjoy. I’m all for home releases to include additional content, especially a gag reel, which this particular release will feature. So, yay!

A live-action adaptation of the iconic animated movie that premiered back in 2010, the latest HtTYD installment has been directed by Oscar-nominee Dean DeBlois, who also wrote the screenplay. It follows Hiccup’s journey on the Isle of Birk as he changes the Viking village forever after befriending the Night Fury named Toothless and gaining a new perspective on the dragons.

The movie stars Mason Thames as Hiccup. Gerard Butler reprises his role from the animated offering as Chief Stoick the Vast. Astrid is played by Nico Parker. The rest of the cast includes Nick Frost, Gabriel Howell, Bronwyn James, Harry Trevaldwyn, and Julian Dennison.

The Exclusive Bonus Features are:

  • Deleted Scenes with Introductions by Writer/Director Dean DeBlois
  • Gag Reel
  • Love and Legacy: Making HtTYD
  • Building Berk
  • Dreaming Up the Dragons
  • Fit for a Viking – Highlighting the cast’s transformations into Vikings.
  • Forbidden Friendship with Introductions by Writer/Director Dean DeBlois – A look at Mason Thames performing the full Forbidden Friendship sequence with a puppeteer in the early stages of creating one of the film’s most iconic scenes.
  • Test Drive with Introduction by Writer/Director Dean DeBlois – A look at constructing Hiccup’s first flight with Toothless.
  • Exploring the Isle of Berk at Epic Universe
  • Feature Commentary with Writer/Director Dean DeBlois

The live-action movie was released in theatres on June 13, 2025. It has been rated PG for sequences of intense action and peril. The approximate Runtime is 2 Hours, 5 Minutes.

As of writing this post, How to Train Your Dragon has managed to amass more than $562 million worldwide against a reported budget of around $150 million.

I enjoyed watching it, even though it’s a shot-for-shot remake of the animated movie. The CG on Toothless is impressive. However, some of the other dragon designs feel out of place in live-action. The acting is nice, too. I wouldn’t mind a sequel. But having said that, I would prefer the sequel to include more original content.

What did you think of HtTYD? Are you excited about the home release?
