“Disney Villains: Maleficent” Vol 2 Issue 1 Gets October Debut!

From writer Paulina Ganucheau and artist Theo Stultz, Disney Villains: Maleficent Volume 2 Issue 1 will see the powerful Queen of the Forbidden Mountain seeking even more power!
Based on the Disney animated movie Sleeping Beauty (1959), the upcoming comic book will focus on Maleficent’s adventure after she has cast her curse on Princess Aurora. Set for an October 2025 release date, I’m looking forward to checking it out.
Though I enjoyed the live-action Maleficent movie (2014) starring Angelina Jolie, I have to say that I’m not the biggest fan of transforming iconic villains into misunderstood people and presenting them as protagonists or antiheroes. I’m here for a tale about Maleficent, where she’s shown to be the villain I’m familiar with. I want to see the woman who was okay with cursing a baby and could transform into a giant dragon during the finale. Heck! She planned to imprison Philip until he was on the verge of death due to growing old, and only then allowing him to see the unaged sleeping Aurora.
The story of the comic book will deal with Maleficent learning about a mysterious glowing grimoire after the return of her goblin minions’ raid against a neighboring kingdom. Maleficent senses an “ancient and otherworldly presence” from inside the grimoire. According to Maleficent, the book contains power that would ensure she cements herself as unbeatable against any threat that might come her way.
However, to take possession of the tome, the Queen will have to leave the safety of her kingdom and travel into a dangerously unfamiliar realm.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the narrative explores Maleficent’s character, including her backstory and motivations, even appealing to her “good” side. But as long as she’s portrayed as a sinister villainess by the end of it, who knows what she wants, I think I will enjoy the tale.
I’ll find out soon enough.
