Comixology Originals and Stout Club Entertainment have announced that Devil’s Luck: A Hailstone Story issue 1 will be available on December 9, 2025.

From Brazilian writer Rafael Scavone and artist Eduardo Ferigato, Devil’s Luck: A Hailstone Story is a 5-issue tale that follows a “naïve” dentist who finds himself in a whole lot of trouble after being presented with an opportunity that could change his life forever.

Devil’s Luck: A Hailstone Story has Scavone (Wonder Woman, All-Star Batman, Funny Creek, Red Tag) revisiting Hailstone, “the seemingly sleepy isolated Montana town” that shows up in previous stories by him.

And yes, for those wondering, I did enjoy reading Hailstone.

The upcoming thriller is set during the Great Depression, with the lead character being a dentist named Tim Beacon. While he thought his practice would be profitable, that’s not the case. So, yeah, Tim’s not a fan of continuing to work in a remote mining town. His dream is to find the necessary funding to begin practising in California.

My background as a historian frequently leads me to be curious about specific passages in history, and I enjoy very much diving into the details of a given period and catching some things to bring back into a fictional story,” shared Scavone. “In Devil’s Luck I picked the worst year of the Great Depression not only due to the social and financial turmoil in the U.S., but also because of the skyrocketed price of gold. This helped me ambush the characters in their personal hell of greed and treason and the main character of Devil’s Luck is a dentist, an ordinary profession nowadays, but a rare one in the 1930s.”

While Hailstone had Scavone mix horror with sci-fi and western, the upcoming story is about merging “psychological horror and violent crimes with a twist of the supernatural.”

According to the press release, Brazilian artist Eduardo Ferigato (Radiant Black, Self Made, Last Flight Out, Ultraman, Opala 76) “created a new inking and color style” just for Devil’s Luck to amp up the intensity of the sequences inside the mine. The promotional material described the artwork in the mines as “a thing of chilling beauty.”

I received a review copy of the first chapter, and I have to say that I enjoyed reading it. While the supernatural plays a role in the narrative, I liked how most of the focus was on more “realistic” behaviours exhibited by humans fueled by greed, desperation, revenge, and the like.

With how the first chapter concluded, I’m looking forward to seeing what happens to Tim.

The 5-issue comic book Devil’s Luck: A Hailstone Story will exclusively release monthly from Amazon’s Comixology Originals after debuting on December 9, 2025.
