Beetlejuice & Lydia Deetz to Return to the Big Screen!
Almost all kids have imaginary friends at one point. I had two: Beetlejuice and Lydia Deetz. From my childhood to my awkward adolescence, I worshiped Winona Ryder as my quirky, brunette queen so you can imagine my excitement over the news that Beetlejuice 2 is finally happening and my goth inspiration is returning.
For so many children of the 90s, Tim Burton was the puppetmaster behind our shivery delights of pumpkin kings and dark castles overlooking pastel suburbia but in recent years, Burton has fallen to the wayside and given us disappointment after disappointment. There’s been some light in the darkness (Big Fish is lovely and Sweeney Todd isn’t awful) but for most moviegoers, Burton’s best years are behind him.
Unless, of course, the Ghost with the Most returns in a mayhem of pinstripes and mold and breathes new life into this dead in the water career. Michael Keaton has been on everyone’s mind lately with his triumphant comeback in Birdman, and there are few actresses as talented and enigmatic who deserve a leading role like Winona Ryder.
According to an interview with MTV News, Burton claimed he was inspired to return to a Beetlejuice sequel after working with Ryder on a video for the Killers:
“I worked with [Ryder], I hadn’t seen her in awhile… and she was so great. I was so happy to see her. So those kinds of elements mean something to me. Michael, and her… and that character, I just miss it, there’s some freedom about that character that I love.”
We miss it, too, Tim.
While there’s no full news about the sequel, no script or release date, there’s always hope that this will be the sequel that fans have been waiting over 25 years for.
