“Two Doors Down” Is Unapologetically Funny and Queer! – Recommendation

I’m here to bring another well-written comedy show on your radar. If you are a fan of unapologetic comedy along with some good queer representation, you need to watch Two Doors Down.

Made by BBC Scotland, Two Doors Down is a Scottish sitcom which airs on BBC Two. The pilot was broadcast back in 2013, and the first season began airing on BBC Two in 2016. The show is currently in its fourth season, and with the three previous seasons only consisting of 20 episodes in total, you can easily binge-watch to catch up!

Written and created by Simon Carlyle (Boy Meets Girl) and Gregor Sharp, there is a lot to love about Two Doors Down. Almost all of the episodes are confined to the front room or the kitchen of Beth and Eric Baird’s house, where the cast eat, drink, chat, and annoy each other. The characters rarely show up in other locations.

The cast includes the married couple, Beth and Eric. Their son Ian is gay. Then we have their neighbors Christine and another married couple, Colin and Cathy. At the end of the third season, we got introduced to Michelle and her boyfriend Alan.

While the script is full of jokes and problematic behavior (I’m looking at you, Cathy!), the cast does an excellent job of doing it justice. Every character has a different personality and it is so much fun seeing them interact with each other. From the one-liners to awkward pauses, the comedic timing is perfect.

Beth is played by Arabella Weir. She is someone who finds herself being taken for granted by everyone around her. She is also the sanest one in the group and an overall kind woman. Her husband Eric, played by Alex Norton loves Beth, but can sometimes get mixed up in the craziness happening around him.

Jamie Quinn’s Ian is a delight. He has his own life outside the house. But it is always fun to see him drop by his parent’s home, especially with his current boyfriend Gordon (Kieran Hodgson). It is a wonder Gordon is able to survive the insanity going around in that place whenever the neighbors are over.

In a similar boat, we have Michelle (Joy McAvoy) and Alan (Graeme Stevely). Both are trying to adapt to their new neighbors.

Doon Mackichan plays Cathy Whyte. She likes to stir things up and is very self-absorbed. You won’t be able to get enough of her! Jonathan Watson plays her husband Colin. He, like Cathy, prefers to have every conversation be all about him.

Elaine C. Smith delivers a wonderful performance as Christine. She does like to complain a lot and doesn’t understand how annoying she can be (or doesn’t care).

It is tough for me to explain the type of comedy used in Two Doors Down. It can surely make certain viewers feel uncomfortable, and I love it!

Do yourself a favor and see if you are able to watch the first episode in season 4. Titled “Anniversary,” it is the perfect example of what this series has to offer.
