Mo Dao Zu Shi Season 3 Is Coming!

Mo Dao Zu Shi Season 3

Mo Dao Zu Shi season 3 has a brand new and exciting trailer, but unfortunately we still don’t have a release date.

In a year filled with a ton of Mo Xiang Tong Xiu news, we’ve had surprisingly few updates about Mo Dao Zu Shi season 3.  Thankfully, a brand new trailer has been released just in time for Lan Wangji’s birthday. Happy birthday, Lan Wangji!

People had assumed the third season of the popular danmei adaption was going to come out before the first season of MXTX’s other popular work, Tian Guan Ci Fu, but over the past year any updates on the series have been few and far between.  Some had wondered if it had been stuck in some sort of production hell because of the pandemic, or potential censorship issues (not likely, in my opinion, but a persistent rumor nonetheless).  Some wondered if we’d even get it at all.  But now we have a trailer and it looks pretty amazing.

The next season looks like it’s set to bring us up almost to the same point as the manhua adaption, which also happened with the past season of Tian Guan Ci Fu.  When you’re covering a story that already has an adaption in the works, it’s bound to happen. But it certainly makes it more fun to compare!

This particular arc has many fan-favorite characters and ships, so those who are donghua-only have a lot of fun fan content to look forward to on the other side of the season.  There’s tons of fanfic, art, and meta to dive into about these upcoming characters, so there’s a lot to explore.  If you can’t wait, though, you can always read the book, the manhua, or watch the live action adaption so you can join in the fun early.  Trust me.  It’s worth it!

Mo Dao Zu Shi season 3The sequences we were shown in the new Mo Dao Zu Shi season 3 trailer also make me super excited to see Wei Wuxian using his powers even more.  The visual way they translated demonic cultivation from the book to animation has been very aesthetically pleasing so far.  Everything from the red glowing eyes, the black wispy smoke, and the physical way he wields his powers has been really beautifully done.  I’ve basically decided that these features are the canon when I’m writing fic at this point, so I’m excited to have more material to work with.

There is, unfortunately, no release date yet, which is a bit frustrating for impatient folk like myself.  While I’m new to donghua fandom, it does seem like release date news is released a lot closer to the actual launch, though, so I suppose we just need to be a little more patient.  I’m grateful we’re getting any new content at all, honestly, so I’ll wait and stop complaining… for now.

But since we’re here and impatient, I’ll leave you with a screen shot of a picture that’s driven fandom wild for, uh, reasons (read the book extras, folks).  Please enjoy this close up of Bichen’s hilt and prepare to wait for the next season. See you then!

  1. I’m curious since I can’t seem to find a clear answer anywhere, is this supposed to be the last season of the donghua? I’m hearing mixed things, plus it doesn’t seem like this season will have enough time to cover the rest of the plot, so I’m hoping not! I’m super excited though! It looks really hype, especially with the super cool adaptation of demonic cultivation.

    1. I haven’t heard that it’s the last season yet, but I also haven’t heard anything about a 4th season either. If it is the last season, they definitely can’t get through the entire story in this time frame. It’ll be severely limited. But we’ll see I suppose!

  2. Still waiting May7 2021 Mo Dao Zu Shi. I FOUND MOST OF GOOD STUFF FELL BY THE WAYSIDE FOR MANY REASONS IN 2020. My very best friend died of covid 19 and we both enjoyed all this stuff. Kind of sucks don’t it !
