Creator Spotlight: Paper Cat Press
Even if you dig through the Internet deep enough, there will always be missed opportunities and financial aid. Creators often don’t hear about the available resources they need due to lack of access or referrals. Illustrator and comic artist Leanna C. (frenchpressplz) created the site Paper Cat Press (in August 2016) to curate resources, grants, job and internship opportunities, and more.
Paper Cat Press serves as an online bulletin board that provides creators from various mediums, like comics and prose writers, with much sought after resources and opportunities. Each week, Leanna posts a weekly roundup which includes links to open anthology submissions, job boards for animators and game designers, grants, and more. The site also lists social resources involving anti-racist initiatives, low cost services (i.e., medical, mental health), and alternatives to calling the cops. Of course, there are search engines and social media platforms, but most of the resources would have slipped under the radar if not for Leanna’s efforts.
Marginalized and underrepresented creators seeking more traffic for their work can find directories and lists to add their names to. The general/misc. section of the roundup includes #DrawingWhileBlack and The Latinx Collective. The online bulletin highlights other notable creator databases like The Queer Cartoonists Database, LGBTQ Webcomics, Disabled Cartoonists Database, and more. So Paper Cat Press doesn’t only offer otherwise-hard-to-find directories, but the site particularly reaches out to underrepresented groups as well.
The site includes submissions calls from online speculative fiction magazines, especially calls for BIPOC and multiple marginalized writers and illustrators. Again, some of these opportunities and resources are often missed. Paper Cat Press is more than another word of mouth; it’s a beacon for creators, writers, and more that feel like they’re constantly running into dead ends.
You can support Leanna on her Patreon and Ko-Fi. If you know of an opportunity or resource that isn’t listed on Paper Cat Press yet, or you have any questions, please reach out to her here. Plus, be sure to sign up for the newsletter to get notified about new roundups!
