Hazbin Hotel 2×05 and 2×06 Review: “Silenced” and “Scream Rain”

Vox rallies the people of Hell against Heaven and plans to put an end to Charlie once and for all in “Silenced” and “Scream Rain.”
As Charlie (Erika Henningsen) struggles with her failed attempts in the past two episodes to prove the legitimacy of the Hazbin Hotel, Vox (Christian Borle) furthers his plans to destroy Charlie and take over Heaven in “Silenced” and “Scream Rain.” The combination of great songs, important character moments, and interesting revelations make the two episodes memorable.
Charlie continues to struggle and is desperate to contact Emily (Shoba Narayan) to prove Sir Pentious’s (Alex Brightman) redemption. Vaggie (Stephanie Beatriz) tries to be supportive and enlists Lucifer (Jeremy Jordan) to stop Vox from spreading lies about Charlie. Lucifer confesses that he has no actual power over the sinners in Hell, and has gotten through his cursed existence by ignoring the world around him. It’s an interesting twist on the story of Lucifer that illuminates why he and Charlie get so little respect despite ruling Hell. Regardless, he agrees to try and stop Vox.

Thrilled with his capture of Alastor (Amir Talai), Vox stages a rally to encourage the citizens of Heaven to follow him in rising up against Heaven. Despite being a prisoner, Alastor works to sow discord between Vox and both Velvette (Lilli Cooper) and Valentino (Joel Perez) as he amusingly antagonizes Vox and provides commentary throughout both episodes.
Meanwhile in Heaven, Sera (Patina Miller), Emily, Lute (Jessica Vosk), and Abel (Patrick Stump) discuss what they should do going forward. Sir Pentious, who has become better adjusted to Heaven, suggests an apology for the exterminations. The idea of apologizing with gift baskets may come out of good intentions, but the clearly horrible strategy is doomed to fail. The council of Heaven finally reach out to Charlie, who is on board with the idea and brings them over to Vox’s rally without raising any objections.
Vox’s rally is a huge success as he proves that Lucifer has no power over him, rightfully calls out Heaven’s ridiculous idea to apologize for genocide with gift baskets, and uses his charisma to perform a song that wins over most of Hell’s citizens. Despite Vox being absolutely correct about the gift baskets, his manipulations, attacks on Charlie and her allies, and his promise to make Hell great again make him a formidable yet easy to hate villain.
Frustrated with her failed attempts to stop Vox’s rally, Charlie yells at both Vaggie and Lucifer for their attempts to help her. While Charlie tells Lucifer to go away, Vaggie expresses her frustration that Charlie hasn’t been listening to her and points out how Charlie’s focus on Vox has pushed everyone and everything else aside. Thankfully, the two reconcile later with both talking out their feelings and a sweet and fun duet that doubles as a sex scene.
Elsewhere, Husk (Keith David) leaves the hotel in frustration and finds himself falling back into his gambling and drinking vices in a fun song. He is shocked to see Angel Dust (Blake Roman) performing in drag at the bar with an equally enjoyable song and the two share a great moment afterwards where Angel encourages him to come back to the hotel. In addition, a fun minor subplot of Niffty (Kimiko Glenn) being temporarily left in charge of the hotel and instead trying to train a group of bugs to perform in a band adds some levity to the episode.
Unfortunately, Angel never returns to the hotel as Vox and Valentino summon him soon after his conversation with Husk. Vox reveals his most devastating move as he tells Angel that he has been hypnotizing him to spy on the hotel for quite some time without him knowing about his own betrayal. Angel and the audience barely have time to process this surprising revelation as Vox captures Angel and lures Lucifer by calling him and pretending to be Charlie. Though things seem dire, thankfully both Husk and Cherri Bomb (Krystina Alabado) are suspicious of Angel’s disappearance and hopefully will team up to save Angel and help Charlie with stopping Vox’s plan.
Vox proves himself to be both an incredibly manipulative and ruthless villain in “Silenced” and “Scream Rain,” setting the stage for a powerful showdown where Charlie and her allies will hopefully ultimately prevail in the final two episodes of the season.
