To celebrate the 20th-Anniversary for the iconic queer film Brokeback Mountain, Focus Features will be re-releasing the movie in theatres, with special screenings beginning on June 22, 2025, and June 25, 2025.

The upcoming nationwide theatrical re-release of Brokeback Mountain will be accompanied by an all-new poster, along with forthcoming merchandise and other connected initiatives. Details about what fans can expect will be shared down the line. The good news, for now, is that if you’re interested in celebrating the anniversary, tickets are currently available.

From what I understand, the showings will last from June 20, 2025 – June 25, 2025. However, the special screenings will only be on June 22, 2025, and June 25, 2025.

Directed by Ang Lee, the award-winning movie starred the late Heath Ledger, Jake Gyllenhaal, Anne Hathaway, and Michelle Williams, with Ledger and Gyllenhaal playing the lead roles of Ennis Del Mar and Jack Twist, respectively. The movie is based on the short story by author Annie Proulx

Released in December 2005, the premise deals with two young cowboys falling in love with each other during the 1960s. The story follows their decades-long relationship as the duo grows up in a highly anti-queer society. Made on a reported production budget of approximately $14 million, it went on to gross more than $178 million at the global box office.

Brokeback Mountain was nominated for Best Picture at the 78th Academy Awards and went on to win Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Original Score. It’s rightfully considered as one of the best queer films ever made. I initially watched it back in 2006 as a young teenager, after learning about it via Oscar news coverage. Frankly, while I appreciated the artistry, it wasn’t the best movie for a young me to watch while living in Pakistan. I was shooketh! That soundtrack haunted me for weeks!

I did make myself re-watch it in 2014, and I was surprised how differently a young adult me viewed the narrative compared to my 2006 version. The re-watch made me write analysis pieces on Ennis Del Mar and Jack Twist. I also found a newfound appreciation for the female characters when it came to how they handled being linked to two closeted gay men.

I’m here for the movie’s 20th anniversary being celebrated by bringing it back to theatres for longtime fans to enjoy (again!) as well as for such a film to reach a newer audience.

Are you excited about the re-release? Will you be attending the special screenings?
