News from SDCC 2025: The World of “The Dragon Prince” Expands

If you thought you were done with Xadia, you thought wrong. Wonderstorm, the independent multimedia studio behind the Emmy-winning animated series The Dragon Prince, revealed yesterday at San Diego Comic-Con that they will be expanding the world with a new series.
Series creators Aaron Ehasz (head writer and co-EP, Avatar: The Last Airbender) and Justin Richmond (game director of Sony’s Uncharted) had always been clear that the story of The Dragon Prince was going to be told in seven seasons. (At least that’s what they told us at their New York Comic Con panel last year.) But as they approached season 7, which premiered on Netflix last December, they realized that they may have been mistaken.
Enter The Dragon King! Set seven years (and 19 days) after the original series, The Dragon King will follow the inevitable return of Aaravos. Many of the beloved characters from The Dragon Prince, now adults (or close to it), will return, and Wonderstorm promises a “no-holds-barred payoff to the mysteries of Arcs One and Two”.
Though existing fans will recognize the new series as Arc Three of The Dragon Prince, The Dragon King is intended to function as a standalone series, which will hopefully lure in new fans. And with this voice cast, hopefully it will attract fans from other fanbases, as it combines voice talent from The Dragon Prince, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and Critical Role.
Among the returning voice cast from The Dragon Prince is Jack de Sena (Callum), who also starred in Avatar: The Last Airbender as Sokka. (You may have caught several nods to ATLA throughout the series.) The Dragon King reunites de Sena with ATLA castmate Dante Basco (Zuko), who will be “dramatically expanding” his role as Zym, the titular dragon king. They will be joined by Critical Role co-founding member Liam O’Brien, who will voice a new character “poised to disrupt the world order of Xadia”.
“The fans have grown up with the Dragon Prince characters, so we wanted to create a more mature series that reflects that evolution,” said Aaron Ehasz, CEO and co-founder of Wonderstorm. “We’re bringing back the incredible voice work of Jack and Dante to reprise their roles, and thrilled to be adding Liam to the cast, in what we see as a creative collaboration of the talent and a coming together of three powerful fandoms.”
Wonderstorm will be launching a Kickstarter campaign to fund the series, in order to make sure that the series can remain independent as well as fully realize the creators’ vision. But the Kickstarter also claims to offer fans a bigger role in the creation of the series. As per the Kickstarter page, when the campaign fully launches next month, backers will learn about “truly unique ways to get involved behind the scenes”.
“The Dragon Prince enjoys the unusual privilege of being a completely independent original property, and the fans have always played an important role in driving the franchise,” commented chief creative officer and Wonderstorm co-founder Justin Richmond. “We need the community’s help to bring this new series to life, and have come up with some special campaign rewards that will give fans several opportunities to help shape the project and join us on the journey.”
I have fallen very behind on The Dragon Prince, but I fully intend to catch up! I will say that after their NYCC panel last year, where they admitted that they weren’t going to be able to finish the story in seven seasons like they thought, that I lost some motivation to finish the show. Learning that they absolutely plan to continue is very exciting.
I’m intrigued by the idea of letting fans become more involved in the creation of the show, although I’ve been in fandom long enough to know that it’s not always a good idea. I’ll reserve judgment until I see what kind of opportunities there are. Honestly, I think it would be cool to be able to suggest names for characters, or come up with new creatures.
Make sure that you’re following the Kickstarter so that you will be notified as soon as it launches! You can also join the official Discord, if you haven’t already.
