YAR! Prepare to be boarded, mateys, as the Max original comedy Our Flag Means Death‘s second season has finally announced its launch.

Created by David Jenkins, the pirate comedy stars Rhys Darby as gentleman pirate Stede Bonnet (a real pirate, by the way) who runs an unusual ship for the time period. In his travels, he comes across Blackbeard (Taika Waititi) and the two quickly become friends… and then more. The season ended with a major cliffhanger, with – after realizing he was in love with Blackbeard — Stede leaves his family for good and deciding to return to the pirate life. However, Blackbeard thinks Stede left him for good and is returning to old ways.

The show was a hit with most critics (including our own – see the various coverage we’ve given the show here). It never takes itself too seriously, which is a good chunk of why I personally ended up falling in love with the show. But one of the big things is the diversity of the cast: from the romance of the two leads to having a nonbinary character, it embraces its queerness. In fact, Out Magazine wrote “Our Flag Means Death is, simply put, the best queer show on TV right now.”

Critics aren’t the only ones who love it: the show has a very dedicated fan base, with over 20,000 works on Archive of Our Own. The cast has embraced this fan culture, with some of them not only acknowledging fan art but complimenting it. While I’m a strong believer in the wall between creator and fan, for it to be broken down so positively has made the show (and fandom) a joy. It seems to have a pretty decent crossover with Good Omens fans, with a running joke that these two and What We Do in the Shadows television series is the new SuperWhoLock of fandom.

With the writers’ strike (and then the actors’ strike that followed), it’s been tough going as we weathered news of season 2. But there’s now clear sailing ahead as on August 30, 2023, Max sent out news that the second season will debut October 5, and included a teaser.

The teaser shows Stede writing letters to Ed (Blackbeard’s real name) about his love, while Blackbeard… is less than pleased about romance brewing. Love and violence, the ship seems to be hitting rocky waters throughout the teaser.

The announcement included that returning to the cast would not only be Darby and Waititi, but also the return of most of the cast (no word on Lucius’s fate, having been thrown overboard, as Nathan Foad is not listed). One of the other things I liked about the show was its guest stars, and season 2 doesn’t disappoint with the announcement of two new guest stars, including Minnie Driver and Bronson Pinchot.

I for one squeed like the fangirl I am when I saw the email announcement, and have watched the teaser more times than I care to admit. But October is not here yet, so I guess that means another re-watch is on the horizon. More information about Our Flag Means Death can be found here.
